Can students in California be left alone in a classroom or locker room at school?
I've tried searching California Ed Code but can't seem to find anything. I've always thought that a student on school grounds can't be in a classroom or building (such as a locker room, drama room/theater, school library etc) alone.
If there is a code, do you know what it is or where I can view it?
Thanks!
No I'm not new to this logic thing. I asked the question because I am teacher in California and see students left alone all the time in classrooms, gyms, lockers, libraries etc. Not only do I tell them to leave for their own safety, but for the sake liability for the school and all it's staff members.
I also ask this question because where I teach there is no supervision in the locker room. I was told by my principal that the teacher can only supervise to and from the locker room. Personally I believe that it's open a huge door unsafe events to happen.

I am a California teacher. There is no law on this.
That is something simply left to school or district policy. My district has no rules on this, they simply ask we use common sense.

You're kind of new to this "logic" thing, aren't you?
You figured that, since nobody ever EVER leaves a child unattended in a school, there must be a law against it.
But there is another possibility.
In this country we have something called, civil court. Meaning that if you are acting 'in loco parentis', in the place of the parents BY LAW, and you leave a kid alone and the kid cuts his wrists and dies... Are you with me? You are then legally responsible. And so is the school. And maybe the principal. Maybe the entire district.
Do you see now why schools have policies about leaving kids alone and how there is no need for such a law?
I hope so.

Edit:
Well, think about it for a minute. How much does the legislature actually determine what happens in your school? And if there were such a law, why would there be such rampant, flagrant violations of the law in your school? Right out in the open where everyone can see it. Does that make sense? Are you violating other laws like, oh, I don't know, segregating children by race? The law cares about things like that a whole lot. But to become involved in the intricate workings of a school? Come on. Put a little thought into these things. That was my point. You're a teacher. You should know better.

Are you talking about high school students? You realize that they're not only left alone at home all the time, they are often taking care of much smaller children (possibly their own).
There are sometimes messages on these boards from kids who notice that there's a teacher in the locker room with them- they accuse the teacher of being a pedophile! No, they shouldn't have to have someone in the locker room with them. 14-18 year olds are perfectly capable of dressing and undressing themselves.

No they cannot be left alone. EdCode REQUIRES a staff member to be to supervise.http://www.cde.ca.gov/pd/ca/pe/physeducfaqs.asp#Dr...
