How do you think the Shroud of Turin was made?

I'm guessing that the Sudarium of Oviedo was removed from the face and folded before the Shroud was laid over the face.

If the corpse was not Jesus of Nazareth, how did someone get an artist's model to consent to having the injuries of a crucifixion recreated on him? If it was not an artist's model, but was some other corpse of a crucifixion victim, why would there have been bleeding thorn injuries to the forehead and scalp? You wouldn't be able to get a body until after it was dead, at which time it stops bleeding. The fact that a sudarium was with the body points to a real corpse, not an artist's model.

Someone has (and I think justifiably) pointed out that a shroud is typically wrapped around a body, not draped, as the Shroud of Turin was. If you've seen real fingerprints taken, you know that wrapping would cause a distorted image, as you'd get all of a body's surface, not just the top and bottom sides of it. This to me is the strongest argument for the Shroud being a hoax. But you still run into the issue of artist's model versus corpse, don't you?

Update:

Mike: LMAO!!! Good answer!

rd68: You might well have the right of it.

Others: Paint would have soaked through the Shroud more. The image occurs on only the topmost fibrils of the cloth.

There are 16 others?! Where can I find information about them?

Update 2:

Scott B.: I'm not claiming that it's a hoax. I am fascinated by it specifically because it's a mystery to me.

The shroud of turin is unique in many different ways. First of all only Christ and the man on the shroud have been shown to have been crucified in this fashion, no other crucified person in recorded history has been known to have been crucified this way.

No artist could have done this image for many reasons. First no one until recent times had access to photography so no miedeval forgerer could have done it and wouldnt need to do it because no one back then could have viewed the negative as there was no photgraphic technology back then.

and your arguing against the shroud being a hoax is an argument from ignorance of the facts.

First of all there is 3d spatial topographical information on the shroud which disappears after 2 inches. that tells us that when image formation was made, the shroud wasnt wrapped or draped over the body, it was actually hovering at 2 inches the most above and below the body. This is correlated by what shows on the dorsal image, that there is no compression at all on the dorsal image. If a body was laying against the burial stone compression would have shown on the backside image. It doesnt show on the shroud. This is further coraborrated by the pristine blood clots. This shows a complete lack of gravity at the point of image formation.

The blood clots are absolutely not smeared or torn, plus the surrounding and underlying fibers have no tearing at all. How do you get a bloody body off a burial shroud in a natural way, where the blood forms a light bond with the cloth. Any attempt to get the body off the cloth would have either produced a tear in the blood cloth, a smear of the blood cloth and tearing of the underlying fibers under and surrounding the blood. The body would have had to become transparent and pass right through the shroud

These 3 evidences point towards a supernatural origin of of the image formation, and the event historically talked about as far as the shroud is the resurrection of Christ. You need to really dig deep into shroud research to uncover these evidences.

Now also ask yourself why would a foger also place rare travertine aragonite on the shroud not knowing that this could not be detected for another 500 to 1500 years. The answeer is its rediculous that he would do it.

Why would be place microscopic pollen on the shroud coming from the area of jerusalem and only blooming in springtime. The answer is that the forger wouldnt need to because there was no reason to do this to foll the people of those times. The most reasonable and obvious answer is that this is the original burial cloth of the historical Jesus.

Once you get to this point, you know that even 21st century science cant replicate the image on this cloth with the best technologies that we currently have. The image has 3d spatial topographical information, has xray information of the hands, wrist, jaw, gum and teeth and left femur.

The only reasonable assumption is that this image was caused as Jesus Christ went through the resurrection process. No other explanation makes sense here.

How do u also explain that the image of the man on the shroud of turin shows a man that is in a state of rigor mortis, and rigor mortis only lasts at most 48 hours mor or less. How would the forger know how to do this or would care to do this. The answer is he couldnt, especially back then. This information tells us that the body on the shroud couldnt have been on that body for more then this time, which fits the resurrection narrative of the gospels perfectly as he was put in the tomb lat friday evening and was gone when the women discovered the tomb empty on sunday morning.

If you really want to learn all there is about the shroud, Stephen Jones has in my opinion the best shroud blog online here http://theshroudofturin.blogspot.com/

There is a massive amount of detailed research on the shroud going back many many years back.

This blog alone will help you dig deep into shroud research and understand why this is one of the most scientifically studied objects on earth

There are 16 different "authenticated" true burial shrouds of jesus.

Realistically there could be no more than one, but the religious are neither realistic nor bright.

    The bible supplies this description;

John 20:5 to 7: ‘Stooping down, John saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not enter the tomb.

Then Peter came up after him and went into the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there; but the burial cloth which had been around Jesus' head was not lying with the other linen cloths, but was rolled up in a place by itself’.

So the bible says that the shroud was two pieces. So what is it? The bible lies? or the shroud of turin is a transparent fake.

The figure in the shroud is not really proportional to human beings. It is a stylized figure reminiscent of artwork of the age.

The shroud looks like a twist on a brass rubbing. You don't see a lot of that sort of thing in America, but it involves taking a crude "print" from an embossed "plate" and transferring the image by rubbing it with some sort of darkening agent.

There are many that can be seen in beautiful medieval cathedrals.

It's very cool but it certainly is not genuine. Just a nice piece of medieval artwork carbon-dated to the time that sort of thing was common.

I know a thing or two about artwork.

About those copies, do a simple search for Luigi Fossati--shroud copies. That should bring up images of the multiple painted copies of the shroud. You can also try searching the site Shroud.com.

If you are in the USA there is an ancient shroud copy in. New Jersey.

What makes you think that there's actual blood on that cloth and not just "paint"?

As for it being fake, even the Bible says that it is...

John 19:40..."Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them [Joseph of Arimathea & Nicodemus] wrapped it, with spices, in STRIPS OF LINEN. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs."

John 20: 6-7..."Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the STRIPS OF LINEN lying there, as well as the CLOTH that had been WRAPPED AROUND JESUS' HEAD. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen."

The problem with your "hoax" claim is that it can't be replicated by even modern techniques. The fact that we don't know how it was made makes the plausibility of it being a hoax, slim.

I've never cared enough to even bother thinking about it. It's only 700 years old, and that's all we need to concern ourselves with when considering what it was claimed to be.
