I really don't understand 1 and 2 aren't the basically the same thing? If this is from your teacher it's not well written because standing up for someone is pretty much the same as protecting them.

1. Jesus talking to the Woman at the well, and protecting her against people that were against him.

2. Jesus protecting the woman who committed adultry by asking "Who has no sin cast the first stone?" He protected everyone, himself, and the disciple in that situation.
