Questions about meletonin?

So I have trouble sleeping and become dependent on sleeping pills.

Tons of people have recommended meletonin to me. I just wanted to know if you become dependent on it?

I do not want to have to rely on pills to sleep, I just want to get down a sleeping pattern and need a littlehhelp.

I've been trying, for weeks to get to sleep early and wake up early. But every night I lay down and close my eyes and cannot sleep. I've been drinking chamomile tea because it used to help when I was little but it hasn't been helping.

If you have experience with meletonin please share your experience with me.

Thanks.

Update:

I haven't used any kind of sleeping pills in over a year btw

In a sense, you can become dependent on ANYTHING. Some people can’t sleep without their favorite pillow, so by definition, they are dependent on their pillow. The only problem is when that dependency causes harm to your body, and melatonin (with an A) will NOT do that. If you take it long enough to change your sleep schedule - and that’s what it’s really for - that doesn’t mean you will need to keep taking it to get to sleep. Just remember that you have to work with it. That means you have to use it for sleep at night, and nighttime only, and you can’t expect it to work if you’re trying to fall asleep, but are sitting up with your computer or your TV instead.

I take melatonin whenever I can’t fall asleep. It usually means I’ll be out within a half hour. But without it, I can lie in bed for 6-8 hours and get no sleep! You also can’t overdose on it, although I wouldn’t recommend taking anymore than you really need. It wouldn’t hurt you if you did, but it would be a major waste of money! Also, if I take it tonight, it doesn’t mean I will have to take it tomorrow night. I used to try chamomile and Sleepy Time teas, but I ended up having to get up to go to the bathroom, and every time I woke up, I could never get back to sleep!

All in all, melatonin is just a really good thing to use.

In response to several studies showing that doses as low as 300 micrograms of melatonin can induce an enhanced state of drowsiness and provide a better quality of sleep. For those who have tried higher dose melatonin supplements and not found effective relief from insomnia, these lower dose supplements may prove effective. Most people use 3 mg of melatonin at night to induce better sleep and saturate their body with high levels of melatonin. There will be some people, on the other hand, who may find they sleep better by taking only 110 this amount, i.e. 300 mcg of melatonin.

Melatonin is a chemical your body naturally makes. When you take melatonin, it just increases the amount in your body. So no, you don't become dependent on it. And it works quickly. I can take melatonin and be asleep in five minutes. I'd suggest trying it.
