Why are there so many haters of martial arts?

What is it about TMA that other are jealous of that causing them to attack TMA? Are people that intimidated by things other than what they like?

I recent article talks about the bickering between mma and boxing. Those on yahoo answers have seen similar ignorant attacks from fan boy and want to be fighter attack TMA? We know it is sad but it happens. The writer says this is fueled by ignorance.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ufcs-chael-sonnen-bla...

I wonder if anyone can give a good answer that is factually stated as to why it is a common thing for people to attack things that are bigger, greater, or that have more history than themselves.

TMA is not going anywhere. It has been here for a very long time and will continue.

If you come to attack TMA or those that train in it please provide detailed documentation from scholarly sources as to why you believe what you do.Wikipedia, youtube, etc are not scholarly sources.

Update:

I would love if Idai could support that 10% claim. IMO if not it is no different than 95% of all fight go to the ground lies that has influenced the public.

For the record I have not bashed MMA or any combat sport. I have not claimed that all are fan or want a be fighters. Reading is fundamental.

So far no factually stated arguments have been made against TMA. Only some argument from people with an ax to grind and blaming others with no empirical proof to base the argument.

I know I can't control what anyone does, but I hope everyone would refrain from the thumbs down. I know some have earned it, but it serves no purpose on this question.

I don't know madmax but at least this user gave a well written argument. But it doesn't really provide us a reason for the hatred other than fear or ignorance. But I like the response. I don't agree with some of its statements but it gets a thumb up from me.

If Odee respond I expect he will do some research and provide a good arg

Update 2:

Why is there so much hostility coming from Jacob. Clearly Jacob is misreading the questions. Why is there so much hatred on of martial arts an on thing that are bigger, better, or more historical. Example given are an epic fail as they do not address the questions. Just example of an individual competing against another individual. Surely everyone is intelligent enough to know the MMA, TMA, Boxing, Wrestling does not compete against one another in a physical contest. Only individuals do this not the art/style. It is ignorance that perpetuate misconceptions built on false information.

It s obvious that there are differences in sports and life threatening situations. There are differences in individual skill level. People worship Chuck Norris and his accomplishments. He has some. But he is nothing more than a person the competes in sport setting. That is his claim to fame other than the movies. Put a boxer that has trained for the sport of boxing in a wrestling match the odds favor the

It's mainly ignorance, they listen to RBSD types who say this and that will not work in a real fight, even though what they show has not been proven any more than a TMA has. They watch the UFC and believe that it accurately represents a real life encounter closer than anything else and think that just because they have seen a sport version of a martial art not succeed that it means that all martial arts will not either..

    Here's some facts for you jacob;

Fact 1 - The Gracies only accepted challengers they knew they could beat e.g. an inexperienced Hapkido guy versus a 9th Dan Gracie. They refused to acept challenges from Gene Labelle and Benny the Jet because they knew they would get their a$$ handed to them.

Fact 2 - Vale Tudo has rules and is owned by the Gracies.

Fact 3 - Early UFC was also owned by the Gracies which is why they were able to chose their first opponents, it's no accident that Royce's first opponent was a boxer with one glove on and Gerad Gordeu's (Karate guy by the way who only lost 1 fight) was a 400lb Sumo wrestler.

Fact 4 - ALL of the fighters came from SPORT versions of martial arts and many of them won many of their fights

Fact 5 - In UFC 3 Royce Gracie got so beaten up by Kimo he could not continue and Kimo had no martial arts training whatsoever at the time. And a Ninjitsu instructor won the event.

Fact 6 - In the early UFC BJJ was new and unfamiliar to most people at the time.

Fact 7 - The early UFC contained only an insignificantly small sample of all the TMA's and TMA schools and is thus no credible proof of anything. The only credibility that was lost is in the minds of ignorant people.

    Wow

That is all I can say. Just read the answers, and rants on here and the problem defines itself.

M M A, Boxing, amongst other like Olympic Taekwando are sports. Sports can help in self defense yet it is not the same as training for self defense. Anyone who tels you different has not seen the difference and in their own imagination has their mind made up. There is no reason to argue about it. Facts will show fore themselves. Each has a place in the Martial Arts. I loved sparring when I was doing it and it has a place. Is it the whole Martial arts picture: Of course not! Was and is it the same as traditional Taekwando: Of course not! Does it have a place in a schools curriculum? I would argue strongly for it. Thouge I could see the right instructor working around not having it.

So to those who have their nerve endings on the outside of their skin I say get over it. Have a nice day and argue over who is going to the Super Bowl this season. Like I was interested.

I actually asked a similar question a few days back, except that I asked "Why many modern fighters believe TMA is obsolete?", I was glad to know that most of them were on the same page that TMA by itself isnt obsolete but however some raised criticism on how some of these schools have been training people. On the other hand we have had a rebut from passionate TMA followers saying that you can have the same argument for MMA where every aspect of fighting isnt trained.

But I got some reasonable opinions here,if I had decided to have joined some forums,I guess it would have been packed with some MMA lovers bullying their way.

I can just say that TMA wasnt meant to be showpiece, and those who developed these TMA had to do a great deal of fighting that what we are doing. If you see UFC fight, its like school kids fighting - brash and immature, this form of fighting is something that comes easily,so when they use the word "practical" time and again, they just mean that those techniques in TMA are not easy to use.Obviously, who wants to train for some complicated moves like a reverse flying kick or some snake fist moves when they want something easier. Its like someone using starting blocks in his life for the first time. For that person, standing and running is easier and he doesnt have to bend but someone who is trained will agree that block gives the best leverage.

There are many reasons people hate things. In the case of martial arts some hate it because they think it's all about violence. Others think it's all about fighting like MMA/UFC. And others only see it as sport such as TKD and XMA.

The reality is that there are a wide range of martial arts and most people don't have a clue. For instance when it comes up that I teach karate the first question I'm usually asked is do I do MMA or TKD. Few understand that much less popular traditional arts like Uechi Ryu and Goju Ryu exist.

I personally don't worry about the haters. I try and make them aware that there are all kinds of martial arts and that the school, teacher, and student are what's important. Not all arts are right for everyone, and no one art is the be all/end all. For those who listen then get it great, for those who continue to hate, I just ignore them.

In general in every subject that you see on the internet the confrontations and bashing seems to be much higher than normally...Also the swearing and the insulting behaviors the same...I think is a trend that exists on the internet...

A friend of mine is thinking of doing a Phd on this subject (internet behaviors). A good understating on this can come after reading some of the comments on many subjects...So most probably is not a martial arts issue but an internet issue in general...

    Edit:

Mild Max: The Japanese Samurai won the wars against the Mongols (they were never conquered) and not the opposite and the Chinese start winning (despite being conquered) against the Mongols after a while and won in the end...This is why China is big and Mongolia is much smaller with some of its territories still occupied by the Chinese....

Some of the well known Chinese arts have being formed around the 18th century....We are not talking about F-16 here we are talking about styles....

Ancient Greek Phalanx and Roman legion are what is today the anti-riot police all over the world...Athens, Sparta and Macedonia are still Greek, Rome is still Italian...They have being conquered and they have being freed.

The point of discussion here is not about the creation or not, of new styles, or the addition or exclusion of new or old training methods, ways and even diets.

Also the point is not to bash MMA, (which is similar to the ancient Greek Pankration) Boxing and Wrestling (both in the ancient Greek Olympics) is why there is hatred...

In my opinion this is an internet thing....

What is considered as TMA is historically more modern than MMA, Boxing and Wrestling....which I don't think many here have any issues with them...

Anyhow...discussions are good....:) absorb what is useful and learn some history and tradition to help you create a new one...

    Hi there

In the good old days if you wanted to be a critic and write in journalism you had to A. have good knowledge about your chosen subject and B. Have a degree in English or journalism otherwise your articles wouldnt get published for anyone to read!

Fast forward 10 years and we have the world wide web.

Billions of users all with their own views and opinions with only about 10 percent of the people that know their stuff.

Its the web! And its a load of bollocks!

And stop me if im wrong but the last time i checked the best place for martial arts was in a dojo and not on the world wide web :)

    Best wishes

I'm a Brock Lesnar fan. I am a WWE and MMA fan. But WWE is not at all a "martial art". It's shoot wrestling, performance sport, but it is not a competitive, combat sport. If by you mean wrestling, only a blind man would consider WWE's type of wrestling as being the same as MMA wrestling. WWE grew out of shoot wrestling, the type from carnivals and circuses from way back when. MMA is a combination of striking, grappling, and wrestling. That wrestling aspect comes from, usually, Greco-Roman styles. But if your point is that wrestling--as it in the MMA--is the best style, Lesnar's match with Carwin isn't the best fight to use as an example. The only reason Carwin got "outwrestled" was because he was tired, and Lesnar finished the fight with a jiu-jitsu move--not a wrestling move.

@KW - You attack individual styles...not the McDojos that extort them.

And I have provided plenty of evidence to you. You just refuse to either reply or accept it

@JW - I think it's just on the internet or behind people's backs. At school here, I frequent the punching bag room. Sometimes people are there. They'll either make a comment on the rope-like makiwara I strap the the post or whatever it is that I'm doing. One thing leads to another and we have a conversation. They divulge that they are either in MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ, etc and I say what I do, practice, etc. We have a civil conversation and on occasion I'll meet someone that may share knowledge with me on the spot. Visa versa.

Ultimately, it's the fanboys. I don't even think the majority of the Gracies believe in superior styles. They may have their reservations but as far as calling a style flat out ineffective, unless someone proves me wrong, even they haven't done that.

    Nothing to worry about.

    Sev

PS - I fall back on this thought: If it were ineffective...then why do police and military use it?

EDIT: @KW - No, but many police use Aikido, a style you actively bash.

If someone extorts an art, how is it the art's fault?

EDIT: @KW - What about flying?

EDIT: @KW - I guess they don't teach BJJ in freefall?

EDIT: I'm convinced that the vast majority of those who look poorly on TMAs (or as Darth Scandelous calls Classical Arts) have had very poor teachers. I'm also convinced that they are rather petty to believe that someone only works if it works within the confines of a sport. Vale Tudo was also a sport and it, too, had rules. Ultimately, MAs were not built for sport. Therefore, whether or not they work in that sort of setting is moot. Against a TMA/CMA that knows what he/she is doing, it doesn't matter what MA you do think is better, attack them, and you'll still get put on your *** or have you chest caved in.

Because these are entertainers. They know nothing about the other important half of martial arts that is the philosophical side.

Too many people want to be tough guys and these fighters act like animals. True martial arts is to learn and practice the craft and yes to spar but to also be humbled in some way because you realize that there is always something stronger. Nothing makes that more evident than when you are beaten physically.

A real martial artist is a person who isn't arrogant (or at least understands the nature of arrogance and relinquishes it) and has the skill through practice to defend one's self and their loved ones.

Some people in MMA and Boxing I'm sure have this mentality. But many don't and most amateur people I've met who join those 2 sports (ESPECIALLY MMA) become cocky as hell and use it to bully others who have not been trained. MMA also teaches you to kick a person while their down...For these reasons, some people dislike people of these two sports.

There are several reasons why. The main one is ignorance. The problem with ignorance is simple. We can't know what we don't know. Absolutely no one is aware of what they don't know. If you want to know about the martial arts, and what advanced knowledge of it is like, you go to someone that is advanced. Yet we have a large number of people here that see themselves as knowledgeable about the martial arts. What they can't seem to get through their heads is the guys with several decades of solid experience might just know more and have experienced more than they have. If a 10 year old tells you that some martial art is stupid or does not work, only children will listen and believe that. Here we have some of the most aggressive attackers of TMA that advertise that they have 10 years of this or that. but they also say that they started it at age 6 and trained until they were 16..... Does anyone take that seriously. At what age is a child old enough, mature enough and experienced enough about the martial art he practices to be advising others? Unless I'm mistaken. 99.99% of the children studying martial arts are not knowledgeable enough to be telling anyone anything about the martial arts. Some of these young people come here and do so because they get off on bothering the TMA members here. some have said for years now that they hate TMA, and this forum. After they could not figure out for themselves that it would be better to just leave here, they continue to come here and repeat things that are very wrong. They start other martial arts forums and try to make it look impressive by saying that it was founded by top contributors of this forum. but if you look at the membership of that forum you see very few of the Top Members from here. To be a Top contributor here you only have to answer questions often. The answers don't have to be correct or even about the questions asked. This means that anyone can be a Top Contributor. These TMA haters say they want a place to say what ever they want, yet be fair to all martial artists. Then when one of the TC here is inactive for a little while or does not answer an email their mature response is to throw them out of their forum. If they hate TMA so much why not just leave this forum alone? Their forum is closed unless they allow you to be a member. (As If they were in authority). TMA here can't and don't want to go to their forum and cause trouble. Still, they feel the need to come here and attack what they don't understand. They attack all styles as if everyone in them is a fake, deluded, or misguided.

Wow KW, why are you so upset? Oh, and FYI, kokoro, possum, Karate Dave, and Lion dancer all made a long trip to come be at my seminar. They all have lots of experience. OOPS I mentioned it again. Hope your gun is not loaded. and if you don't live in GA, (which I already knew) why don't you change it...
