Dream About a Man's Son Being Kidnapped?

I was in the perspective of a middle-aged Asian police officer who was undercover trying to pursue his son. Everytime he failed, he had to start over from where he left off when he was just blocks away from his son and his kidnapper, a heavy-set Chinese gangster boss with a white fedora hat. The bad guy and the young boy actually get along really well, like they're really family. The dream also runs like a video game with extra lives or chances.

The police officer and his associates were trying to blend into the scenery, even one of the undercover officers was pretending to walk with a noticeable limp (every time they had to start over). But for some reason we'd always get caught or noticed, and the kidnapper and the protagonist's son got away by car or something. For the first few times, all the protagonist did was follow them on foot a bit far from him but within sight. The final time he almost got really close to them, and there was an actual chase involving a motorcycle. He was too late because there was a crowd of people in a circle in the way, and I was running on foot.

I think I woke up with heavy breathing and almost cried. The policeman really loved his son, and never had a chance to spend time with him.

Update:

x P Geez what's with these answers. You guys have to try harder to make people laugh other than yourselves. I don't watch Asian thrillers involving crime or mob bosses, I'm mostly bored with that kind of stuff.

You know, you have quite elaborate dreams that are just overflowing with symbols of different kinds. I imagine you have a very rich inner world. I also imagine that because of that fact, your dreams would be quite difficult for someone else to analyse without knowing you very well, because an elaborate creative imagination is also one that will decorate even the simplest feelings by drawing on a whole host of symbols. I think this can be both a useful and difficult trait to possess. On the one hand, it probably enhances your intuition and connection to life while stimulating your creativity, which is honestly something to treasure strongly in yourself. On the other hand, it probably also allows your unconscious to disguise your true feelings very well, making it quite difficult for you and others to pinpoint what exactly you are wanting or feeling.

On a more personal note - this dream kind of reminds me of some of my own dreams (I don't know many people who have dreams of being other people that are seemingly entirely disconnected from my own self, for instance). Sometimes when I have dreams like that I get this feeling like I'm really just glimpsing into someone else's life, but other times I get this feeling like somehow it relates really strongly to myself. When I think about it, I realise that glimpsing into another person's life is often glimpsing into our own (and vice versa) - it's some sort of creative utilisation of our imagination in order to simultaneously understand both ourselves and the world, for we are both a source and reflection of the things around us.

As for your dream, I really wouldn't know quite where to begin. But there is definitely a lot of emotion there - trying to dearly hold on to someone or even a part of yourself that seems ever out of reach, and the closer you get, the more destructive the situation becomes. It is hard to let go of people and things that we feel belong to us, especially if we feel they have been taken from us unfairly - even if those people and things are perhaps doing fine elsewhere.
