Can you think of any rule that certain religions have that are simply outdated or make no sense?

In the Southern Baptist tradition, most churches and pastors teach that you can't drink any alcohol at all. It's a sin. This causes many people to buy their alcoholic beverages in stores far from where they live. Pretty much no churchgoer is going to buy alcohol near home since they could be seen by a fellow member or by the cashier who knows them. To me it's a silly rule since drunkenness is a sin Biblically, not the mere drinking of alcohol.

Any other ones you feel the same way about?

Reminds me of the old joke about the difference between a Baptist and a Catholic: a Catholic will say hi to you at the liquor store.

Well, the Southern Nazarenes in Oklahoma (where I used to go to church) still think it's a sin to dance. Ever watch the movie Footloose? That is based on a true story in a real Oklahoma town. That same town I used to live in, has it illegal to sell any kind of alcohol in any stores or bars between 2am & 6am on weekdays and every Sunday.

And dear, Jenna, where do you get your information....The Bible says to NOT even LOOK on wine when it is red and fermented...I would suggest that might include do not drink it. And whoever deceives himself into drinking it is a fool [actual wording "is not wise"]

We must go back to where the Bible says "Let God be true [BELIEVED] and every man a liar.....when we disagree with God.

Nothing God sets as a sin or a high standard is ever "Silly" because that is assuming we are wiser than God....His rules are eternal and have value through all time....man really does not change nor does God or GOOD VALUES.

Blessing you with wisdom enough to not be deceived into accepting lesser values!

' most churches and pastors teach that you can't drink any alcohol at all '

cos obviously in american tradition, you can't stop drinking.

whereas if you are an asian, like me, it is not in our tradition to drink wine, alcohol on a daily basis. We do it only on occasions like a wedding, christmas ... you know, special days.

i wouldn't want to live in a small town where i can't buy alcohol or live the way I WANT.

really, as a christian, i follow the bible NOT a preacher.

God has given me FREEDOM and its up to ME to live accordingly,

not for anyone to DICTATE to me how i should live.

    i HATE that.

The Shakers. They make great but austere furniture, but their social lives are austere as well. No sex. It is difficult for a religious group to grow if the members don't reproduce. The religion may have already died out. If there are any members left they must be well into their golden years or maybe their platinum years.

We are warned in the Bible about drunkenness and how we need to be alert and vigilant. Also drinking can cause other spiritual issues....not to mention how many families are being completely destroyed by alcoholism (also very Biblical)...Something to not take lightly.
