Math-how to find the surface area with only a diameter?

I have a math question which requires me to find the surface area, however they only gave me the diameter, what formulas do I have to use to find it and is there an explanation? Need a response quickly, thanks.

    Similar question was asked by one student to his master about 2300 years ago. The Greek master said to his students. Lets chop the diameter in two equal parts. and what do we get? said another student to his master. The master replied. We get a Radius. So if we multiply radius times radius times pi we get the surface of a circle

    My GUESS is that it's a sphere.

    SA of a sphere is 4*pi*r^2

    radius = diameter/2

    So, 4*pi*(d/2)^2. But you didn't give us anymore info

    Snag - you forgot to state what surface area you are supposed to calculate i.e. what solid shape are you dealing with?
