Federal Government shut down?

So this may be a hopping question right now, or it may not be.

Because the federal government has shut down, what does it mean for us as a nation? What does it mean for high school students and college students looking for financial aid and jobs? What does it mean for the working class? How are people supposed to work? Are we going to significantly lose money? What does it mean for elderly and their benefits? Why did the government shut down?

Constitutionally, the government is run by two major parties and has room for other parties to join in. When one of the two major parties decides to stop doing their jobs because of corruption or whatever reason, the government cannot function. I believe they have 'shut down' because of this, and because of the incompetency of the U.S. president. Yes, he is incompetent. News flash? His party I believe has been ruining the country for decades now, and him being in office and manipulating stupid people into doing what he wants is causing the smarter people in our government to take defensive actions. I'm not sure what it shutting down means for us, as citizens, but I'm fairly sure it isn't good. If there is no government, there is no funding for the state governments: no head of the body, basically. So our body, as in local governments, are going to have to run things until the Federal government can get their heads straight.
