Why do anime dubs get a bad rep?

I never understand why people asks questions like this. Personally I have no problem with either version though I only watch subbed version. Just accept the differences and move on with your own ideology, don't force your thoughts on others by saying stupid things and insulting others.

In general, I've found I prefer subs. I really notice the difference once I've seen the sub and then go back to dubs. Even if I originally watched the show with dubs and enjoyed it. When I get the chance to directly compare, I almost always prefer the Japanese cast. There are exceptions. I still really enjoy the dubs for Cowboy Bebop, GitS:SAC, and Trigun. I think there is a difference in the importance of voice acting here vs Japan. Anime is mainstream for them and the actors and actresses become stars. Whereas here, voice acting very niche work. Even major animated shows don't make household names out of the voice actors. How many people know the name of the voice actor for Bart Simpson, ya know? So I imagine that there is less respect for the "craft" of voice acting here. I don't think the actors are poor, but I think they aren't really given much in the way of direction or all that many takes to nail a line delivery. Fair or not, I always picture the groups that produce dubs are much more interested in a fast turn around to make money on the DVD sales or royalties from Adult Swim runs, rather than worrying about getting great performances.

Its really just a matter of preference. I understand your frustration because it does get annoying when someone disses me because I chose a dubbed version over subbed(which usually only happens if the series has a superior dub, or has a ton of dialogue and a complex plot like Ghost in the Shell), but the way you phrase your question puts you in the same boat as them essentially. Just accept that people are going to flame people with a different opinion just because they can. That's life.

As for my personal opinion, there are a lot of great anime that don't have dubs yet, so I watch them in Japanese(and I also am trying to learn Japanese so watching subbed anime helps a lot). I can agree that a lot of people who refuse to watch dubbed shows are misguided, but the reverse is also true. Anyone who refuses to watch one way or the other is going to inevitably miss out on some great content. In the end though its their choice. And its also their choice whether or not they want to be a dick about their preference.

Anyway, you should try out a subbed series sometime. You will have a chance to see some great shows that aren't dubbed yet. :)

You always lose something in translation, whether is from media to media or language to language.

I normally find the voices match how the characters act much more in the subs as well the scene generally, because they were pretty much made too match. Of course dub dont match as well, thats because theres no way to perfectly translate the language or even the slang and sayings the japanese have.

Something about dubs always makes them sound so cheesy, i imagine thats because of what gets lost in translation.

on a more bias note, i hate greg ayres - and every time i hear his whiny voice i want to throw up. And considering how the voice acting comunity isnt actually that huge, he's in sooo many shows.

I think it depends on how good the voice actors are. For example I watched both jap and eng dub of naruto but i think the japanese dub suits the voices more than the english dub. However in Excel Saga I prefer the english dub than the japanese dub as in english its a lot funnier.

TBH i hate the sound. When i first started watching anime all i did was watch dub after a while i moved to sub and i prefer sub then dub. Japanese voice actors match the mood of the anime if that makes since with English voice actors it's just bad... Stupid things, i'm italian and even in italy they say the same things. It's also true that usually 4Kids etc censore animes (and I think that what do the idiotic-supporters-of-japanese-dubs usually wants to refere is this), but hey, cultures changes from country to country and sincerely I prefere dubs more...I study foreign languages so I listen to different language switches (my favouite languages are italian and british english) and my statement is japanese voices are too shrill ans often too much similar to each others

Personally I feel the voices don't match the characters in the dubbed version most of the time. Like a 16 year old kid sounds like a 30 year old man and so on. That's just my opinion.

I totally agree! Why would I want to listen to another language I don't understand and have to read at the bottom using subtitles when I can listen and watch it in plain english? It's just like saying would you rather eat this whole loaf of bread or eat the bread crumbs left for a dog?

why do you have to call people idiots when it's their preference to watch it in Japanese rather than dubbed?

i personally hate dubbed anything..

hell, not all dubs are good, plus, i prefer to listen to it in japanese especially if the background itself is in japan..

i particularly scold my younger brothers if they watch a malay-(my native language)-dubbed cartoons when they can watch it in english...i came from a country where english is as a second or a third language..and guess what? i learned my english through listening to english and reading the english subtitles no matter how rotten they sound.

not only the un-dubbed version sounds better, its also educational.

you can practically learn a little bit of japanese and also their culture through their language and the subtitles..i dont even want to know how do you say yakisoba in english..noodle bread? plus, you can also learn their phrases of how they speak..
