what problems have been seen with the 76 ford truck 460 engine? Engine swelling, what does that mean?

Im dealing with a 76 ford truck 460 engine. itll go 50 or so miles before it needs to be shut down to cool off then it can be driven again, im in the process of buying the truck so my info is limited. they say the engine swells and they have to turn it off. any idea what this means or what i could be?

Update:

could it be too much piston swelling and they are seizing or slightly seizing and causing the engine to run rough.

Engines don't "swell". If the engine is overheating, that's a guess on my part, there is a problem with the cooling system and each time it does this there's a potential for engine damage. In all honesty if this is a known issue on the truck I'd forget it and start looking for another because its very likely there's already been damage done.

not normal! ive ran fords from the 60's through the 90's. if it was going to "swell" it would do it in 10 miles as well. id think it had a direct drive fan, no shroud, oem radiator and long gone thermostat.

the beauty with the old iron head fords, you can get them hot often with very little long term effects. that doesnt mean keep getting it hot, it means its never to late to repair it.

The engine is running to hot ! Change the radiator, and water pump. Also check the timing.
