Avoid drugs. Try natural approaches 1st. Many, many ppl have anxiety in our (US) society. It is VERY common and you are not alone. Lemon balm in the form of capsules or tea have definitely helped me with controlling anxiety. Doctors would advise you to exercise and eat a balanced diet (why not take a vitamin/mineral supplement too) and they would be right.
Stay away from ppl who only want to throw you on meds. I mean if you try the natural approaches that I mentioned and give them time to work (days, weeks, months) and you still need help, then by all means consider acupuncture, and then as a last resort you could try medications
Counseling is non-invasive and may help you get to the root of the problem too. I saw your other question and I really empathize w/you bc I suffer(ed) with anxiety for years. Medications made me impulsive. Some can be addicting (like xanax)
I am a RN and when our nursing instructors saw us getting nervous before performing some nursing skill (like giving a shot or whatever) they told us to take a Deep breath. That will allow more O2 into your bloodstream and calm your nerves. Peppermint (try altoids, they have natural peppermint oil in them) also work to control anxiety.
MInimize caffeine when you can. Avoid drugs period if you can.
Don't worry about what other ppl think bc they have their own insecurities & are likely much, much more worried about themselves than anybody else.
Have patience with yourself and I think you will be fine:)
