Why do Native Americans hate the term " red skins " ?

White people have white skins, Black people have black skins, Native Americans have red skins. What's so offensive ? lt seems that those who object to this terminology are simply ashamed of their color. l am part Cherokee and the term DOES NOT offend me.

Update:

So far the replies that l'm getting seem to be nasty remarks about MY ancestors, indicating that l'm not a "real " Native American and not good enough because l'm not full blooded. lt appears that Native Americans are just as RACIST AND STUPID as those people that they hate !! Treat others with respect and you will get respect !!

Update 2:

Why do you idiots keep saying that my great grandmother was Cherokee-- therefore l'm not " good enough " to be full blooded ?? MY MOTHER is Cherokee !!!! Judging by these nasty replies, l am extremely happy to be only PART Native American.

Okay - you can see how emotional this is for people. Why not stop & ask yourself why?

See, from time to time here beavers make damns that make a mess of things. During these times the government pays a bounty for their tails, proving you killed the vermin. (that is what they are considered when they are a nuisance animal.)

Historically, the government paid a bounty for the scalps or hides of Indian men, women, and children. The human pelts brought in were called red skins. It has been sanitized for the gen pop that red skin refers to the skin colour of a living human.

That is not what it means. It is a throw back to a time when Indians were considered vermin to be exterminated, less than human.

Why not ask a Jewish person how they feel about Nazi lampshades made from the human skin of other murdered Jews? Same idea kiddo.

Native Americans do not have red skins, and this term has been used derogatorily since the late 1800's. It would be akin to having a team named the "chinks" or "yellow man" complete with asian people on the football helmets, or the "wetbacks" with a Latino on the helmets.

When the whites barged in as illegal aliens several centuries ago, a lot of east coast tribes painted our face's red. People in Europe still call us "red Indians".

I suppose you are another of these people who have the Cherokee "grandmother" in an area that has not seen a Cherokee since the 1830's. Let's see your picture.

You're about as much Cherokee as I am Neptunian.

Find an NFL team called the Whiteskins or Blackskins.

In Custer's time, the term Redskins was always used as a derogatory epithet.
