Why do planes have headlights?
So tonight at work I noticed a couple planes flying above with headlights on and I got to thinking.. Why do planes have headlights? They were really bright.. Are they there so the pilots have enough time to kiss their @ss goodbye when they see something infront of them?
Hahaha uhm, I guess your both not aware its the 21st century where planes have gps and altimeters to guide them through the air. Air traffic controllers are employed to ensure planes in the vicintiy do not fly close to eachother and at the exact same altitude so both of your answers do not make sense. Thanks for trying though...
They also have flashing lights all over the plane so you can see them in the air. Headlights just seem unnessesary.
Comical or intelligent answers only please...
Jon - I get what your saying there but these planes were easily above the 10,000 meter mark and no where near an airport. The nearest airport is about a 20 minute flight away. I guess I should have stated that in my question details..
These 2 planes were the first time I have ever seen headlights on a plane where I am. Usually you only see the green and red flashing wing lights which is why im curious. Maybe they are planning on landing on the freeway?

You can never have too many anti-collision lights on an aircraft.

If they were in the leading edges of the wings quite near the fuselage, they are Landing lights.
Planes do not have headlights.
Altimeters and GPS do not work well when you are on the ground !
Or just about to be.
Daft as it may seem pilots do like to see where they are landing and taxiing.
Oh, the tower can see them coming in as well.
Why they would have them on at altitude if not on approach I do not know.
Tweny minutes to touchdown seems a bit soon maybe.
Not knowing the actual airport or conditions makes it too hard to go any further with your answer

The bright lights at the Nose gear of every plane aids the pilot in taxiing the plane from runway to the terminal gate and vice-versa.
Turn Off lights assist the pilot to keep on the taxi-way while making turns. This helps the pilot to steer away from the grass verge.
Wing Scan lights allow illumination of the wing leading edges to determine if there are icing in winter climates.
The red and green lights at the wing tips are navigation lights, red on the left, green on the right.
In the dark night, flight observers would know whether a plane is coming or going.
Anti-collision or strobe lights are high intensity lights to indicate the presence of the plane in the night sky.
Logo lights illuminate the airline livery at the tail-fin.

It sounds to me like you're pretending to know something about aircraft, yet your question shows a complete lack of knowledge, as well as common sense. "Its the 21st century where planes have gps and altimeters to guide them through the air." Only half-correct. Altimeters don't guide an aircraft through the air, and they've been around for 100 years. Also, planes don't land on freeways.
A typical large aircraft has position lights, strobe lights, wing illumination lights, tail flood lights, anti-collision lights, landing lights, taxi lights, and wheel well lights. They don't have "headlights" because they are not cars. They GREATLY improve safety by making the aircraft VISIBLE, and in the air, they help a pilot determine which way it is flying.

Airplanes DO NOT have headlights. They have LANDING LIGHTS and some have TAXI lights. Both sets of lights are used when the airplane is near or on the ground so the pilot can see the runway and taxiways in front of him.
Some airlines also have a policy of turning on the landing lights when flying at altitudes below 10,000 feet, so other airplanes flying in the same general vicinity near an airport can see them.

1. It's not headlights.
2. To aid other aircraft nearby to spot the plane (Believe me this actually helps, if you don't believe me, it's actually because the landing lights are bright, yeah, landing lights are BRIGHT, I emphasized that just in case you don't know.)
3. Illuminate the landing strip and see moving traffic on taxiways.
4. With all respect, I believe that the engineers at Boeing, Airbus, Embraer etc. have better knowledge than you to design planes to fly safely, and all of them have the same thought, a landing light IS necessary (and some guys out there actually spent time, money and effort to engineer a landing light and gain profit from selling them, crazy right?)
5. If you still don't agree with my inputs or the other "intelligent" answers you requested, the existence of fruit preserves is the ultimate reason why planes have landing lights on them. Yeah, fruit preserves baby.

Remember what the purpose of headlights really IS. Headlights are not on cars and airplanes for drivers and pilots to see BY, they are there so that the car or airplane can BE SEEN by other drivers & pilots. The reason the "landing" lights are so bright on airplanes is because airplanes move very quickly and need to be seen from further away than automobiles.

They're called landing lights, and they help illuminate the runway upon landing. They also help an aircraft be seen by other aircraft, and by the control tower as they approach the airport. It is standard procedure for the airlines to turn on the landing lights below 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). It is unusual and unnecessary for them to be displayed at high altitude, although it is becoming more common to turn them on for the entire descent. 20 miles is nothing. That only takes 5-7 minutes at normal approach speeds (250 knots max below 10,000 feet). You will typically see them displayed 80-100 miles out since that is a normal distance for a large jet aircraft to be descending on a standard arrival route.

Most aircraft flying today have at least two Quartz-Halogen sealed beam 'headlamps' in 6-12 or 24 volt configuration..
One is a rather powerful pencil beam for spotting the terrain when approaching a landing area.
The other is a wider fan shaped beam for use when taxiing around on the ground.
Pilots will sometimes turn these lamps on when flying in low visibility or congested areas; and sometimes they simply have forgotten to switch them off in flight.
I used to work in a small private airport and I had one each of these lamps as aux. lights on my motorcycle. Excellent for picking out deer on the road and illegal for road use (my bad).

Planes can have lights on at night so pilots can see their plane. If you're looking out of the window it's easier to see bright lights in the sky that trying to rely on listening to ATC to determine what other aircraft are out there, aircraft that travel 5 miles in a minute, in different directions.
Also lights are turned on to assess any cloud density to see if icing may be an issue and so whether any heating may need to be turned on.
