Questioning my faith and the Bible?

So for the past year I ahve begun to question most conservative beliefs in Christianity. Also, through research and study I even question literal interpretations of SOME parts of the Bible, not all though. I feel like I am a more progressive Christian than I used to be. Don't get me wrong though I love the Bible (I just don't think all of it should be interpreted word for word) , I love God, I bleieve in heaven and angels. But My theology is more liberal than conservative. Is that wrong? I kind of feel like a bad person at times.

Well, in order to understand you and your situation better we'd need to know what specific things you're talking about. It would be hard for us to comment on such a possible wide variety of topics.

For all we know, you could think that the Gospels shouldn't be taken literally and that Jesus was just a story to teach us things. There are those that claim to be Christians that say such.

The mystery's of faith an GOD are beyond human comprehension.

Faith concerns questions which cannot be settled by evidence.

How can the universe create itself out of nothingness? Given the fact that the universe began to exist, it must have had a “cause” that originated it.Doesn't it make more sense to assume the existence of a Creation.

The question is tricky because it sneaks in the false assumption that GOD came from somewhere and then asks where that might be. The answer is that the question does not even make sense. It is like asking, “What does blue smell like?” Blue is not in the category of things that have a smell, so the question itself is flawed. In the same way, GOD is not in the category of things that are created or caused. GOD is uncaused and uncreated—He simply exists.

We know that from nothing, nothing comes. So, if there were ever a time when there was absolutely nothing in existence, then nothing would have ever come into existence. But things do exist. Therefore, since there could never have been absolutely nothing, something had to have always been in existence. That ever-existing being is what we call GOD ,GOD is the un-caused Being that caused everything else to come into existence. God is the uncreated Creator who created the universe and everything in it.

Life without GOD is like an un- sharpened pencil it has no point..

You can't see the wind, but you know it is there because you can see what the wind is doing. You can know that the wind is there because you can feel it.GOD is like the wind, you can't see him.

I struggle with the same thing. In my case, I have tons of "church hurts" that have made it so I don't believe all Christians have good intentions so I'm cautious. And I do feel guilty about it.

People may try to make you feel bad about it. My former Christian friends and family and church were always "chewing" me out over some pretty small things. Like saying I'm a hypocrite if I have Christian posters on my walls, or saying Christian romances are dirty and stuff like that.

If you have been living in opposition of something like that as I have, the guilty feelings come often. Also, you may be one of those types that feels they always have to "go along" with what others say. You can't find out what your real beiefs are by always listening to others because your need to follow God instead may be neglected.

Biblical hermeneutics is actually very simple to understand. Send me an email some time. We can discuss whatever you like. If you haven't been taught how to study the bible, you shouldn't beat yourself up for feeling confused on certain passages. Knowing this, it is a Christian's responsibility to be able to answer sincere questions posed by non Christians and Christians alike. This requires time that many aren't willing to spend.

The one written about in the scripture never wanted to be called a god, as a matter of fact the word translated "other" in have no other gods was originally written as hinder. It means they slow you down, get in the way. He tells you he is more than a god; he is everything everywhere every time. Doubt the teachers for they are flesh.

This is why you need an infallible interpreter of teh Bible..i.e the Catholic church

sola scriptura is a man made doge created by an ex-catholic priest Martin Luther ~1500AD ...who left the catholic church... his man made dogma basically open the doors for each unique interpretation of Scriptures to create a new church denomination and the removal for the need for an infallible interpreter..

so the question is are your infallible in your interpretation of scripture?

Matthew 6:33 tells us to keep seeking the kingdom first.. this involves study and research. Your reasoning on matters is what god wants us to do because we need to prove the acceptable will of god to ourselves. Bible study is so vital to take in truths- I did this myself and followed the admonition at Hebrews 10:24,25 and came into association with a group of united people who worship god according not to mans word but only jehovah god :).... I am one of Jehovah's witnesses. I hope you continue to search out the truth of god and ask questions always in association with prayer daily. Jehovah gave me the answers i needed and i know he will do the same for you.

Hermeneutics, listen to some Walter Martin studies on this topic on how to properly interpret the bible.

  • I would recommend caution - it sounds as though just the tiniest bit reason is starting to creep into your mind and if you are not careful that can lead to thinking like a rational person. but at least then you wouldn't have to worry about the bible.

    Good start.

Now go get some more education, and realize it's not simply not "literal," but entirely made-up and unsupported by any evidence, or shown false by more than ample evidence.

Then you'll be on your way to being rational.
