Are rescue cats more affectionate?

Cats like humans, are all individuals with their own personalities. I've had rescue cats, strays, adopted cats, and years ago I used to breed show cats and the majority of my cats regardless of where they came from, have had good temperaments and were affectionate. A lot of it is in how the cat has been handled and socialized as a kitten and how you treat the cat when you have it.

I adopted Carmen, my rescue Siamese, from a shelter when she was one year old. She didn't get along well with other cats, so she had been kept in her cage, apart form the others, for about 6 months. She actually bit the shelter lady when the lady tried to remove Carmen from her cage for me to get a good look at her. I knew Carmen would be a challenge, but this made me want to give her a cushy life. It took her several months to really get used to being in our house and being with (friendly) people coming and going. Now Carmen is seven, and she's actually like a dog. She loves me so much and is so loyal. She comes running to greet me when I come in the front door, and she sleeps with me every night. She likes to come in the room when people come over, and she rubs up against their legs. Yes, I would say Carmen is now very affectionate, but it took her at least a year of living with me to warm up and show this side.

Ideally you could adopt a kitten from a shelter because then you could give it affection from day one and accustom it to being loved. As for the older rescue cats, you can tell by petting them which ones love being touched. However, many rescues may have not come from a loving situation, and they may take time to feel secure and bonded with you. But it is so worth it to win over your cat's love. My cat Carmen was a challenge when I first met her, but now she is my baby!

It don't matter if they are from a shelter or a breeder. Just look at them and you will find the perfect cat or kitten.
