Get them a cat tree with carpeted shelves and sisal wrapped posts, they'll prefer the rough surface of the sisal to scratch. My cats & kittens have these trees and they choose to scratch on them instead of the furniture. They also love to scratch the cardboard center of a toy called the Turbo scratcher. The Turbo Scratcher has a replaceable cardboard coil in the center and a ball that runs around in a track on the outside edge of it. My cats spend hours playing with this toy.
