    Hi,

It sounds like the cable which links from the screen to the motherboard has broken. This can happen after so long, and it bends with every opening and closing of the laptop. You can get a replacement on eBay and it's quite easy to fit if you have a small enough screwdriver. Just make sure it is for the right model, as there is literally hundreds of models in the Satellite range.

Alternatively, you can take it to a local PC repair shop, most can repair Toshiba laptops but you will be paying more to sort it.

In the meantime, as long as it isn't the graphics that has failed, you can link the laptop to a TV or computer monitor with the right cables/connections; so that your friend doesn't miss his bill payments.

Could be the graphics chip, LCD inverter (controls the backlight) or the LCD panel itself. Hard to tell.
