what type of dodge 318 engine do I have ?

I have a 1965 dodge 318 wide block, I know there are a couple of types of 318s around that year

and I think one of the differences is the rockers. I have all the rockers on a rack rather than all individual rockers. What type is my engine I've heard of poly or A series? The engine came out of a coronet 440 which I believe to be a B body series.

for small block dodges 65 was a transitional year.

if your valve covers are straight along the bottom you have a 273 cubic inch LA engine.

If they have 4 scallops along the bottom its a 318 "poly" A engine.

The 318 poly is often mistakenly called a "wide block 318'' though the blocks are the same, just the heads are different.

If your distributor is in the back you have a 273" LA or 318" A engine.

If the distributor is in front you have a 361" , 383" or 426" wedge B engine.

Source(s): The 65 coronet 440 had 6 engine choices including the slant 6. The 426 "street" Hemi wasnt available to the general public in 65

Dodge made several body styles in 1965. They were named the 330, 440, Polara and the Polara 500. Your 440 Dodge has the most common engine for that year and body, the 318. Mopar has fielded four versions of the 318, all having a common bore spacing block. Most of the differences were in the heads. You most likely have the LA 318 which has valve covers that are straight along the bottom edges. If they are scalloped or wavy along the bottom edge then you have the earlier A engine, the polysphere head 318. Both have shaft mounted rockers but the A engine has solid lifters which are adjustable on the rockers. There were a few B body cars in that year that had the new 273 engine. The cubic inches of the A and LA series engines is stamped into the block just below the block/head parting line on the front of the engine. Very hard to see. It is not a hot rod engine at all.

'65 Dodge coronets came with LA318, 361, 383, and 426 HEMI. I f you don't know how to identify these engines, the 318 will have the numbers on the side of the block right above where the starter bolts on, distributor at the rear. The 361 and 383 engines have the distributor at the front and the size is stamped on a flat on the engine above the timing chain cover.

440 coronet never came with a 318 lol, copy the engine code, I believe it supposed to be in the rear of the engine, but I just don't remember. itll tell you where the engine came from and what it is. a 440 isn't and never was a teeny weeny 318

engine id# came in a couple different spots, so start googling

◦Intake and exhaust arrangement for the Polys is I-E-I-E-I-E-I-E, where the LA/Magnum arrangement is E-I-I-E-E-I-I-E.

Do you see a "paired" set of exhaust valves or are they all separated like a BBC?
