Shorthair cat breeds for first time owners?
I want to get a cat, but not sure what type. I've researched russian blue's and tonkinese cats. I live in Australia by the way.

There are very many short haired cat breeds & I think you'd find it helpful if you could attend a cat show. There you'd see a large variety of the breeds available & get to talk to their owners about the pros & cons of each breed.
While we all have our favourites good breeders try to match a person with a cat breed that's suitable. For example, if you're the kind of person who works all day then goes out most evenings then a lone Bengal would destroy your house out of boredom or if let out most are prolific hunters. A Siamese or Oriental would probably pine when left alone & be really unhappy. If you work from home & stay in most evenings then a Siamese/Oriental would be very rewarding.
If you have a busy household with kids, a Bengal would be most suitable & very happy with all the activity.
Don't forget to find out if the breed you're interested in is prone to specific health problems or if you need to be checking if they've been genetically screened.
Whoever is the registration body in Australia will have a list of shows & affiliated breed clubs. Most breeds have clubs that can put you in touch with owners of the breed so you can phone & chat about your requirements. You should feel like you've had the interview!

IMO unless you plan on showing the cat or need a specific breed (due to allergies) then you don't need to go with a specific breed. Visit your shelters and I'm sure you will find the perfect one to take home.
Before you visit, write out a quick basic list of the type of cat you want; e.g. short hair, male/female, etc and then find something that matches most of what you want.
I dont' believe in "cat will pick you". I think a person should have something in mind when they adopt - I don't like the grooming requirements of any long hair cat, so my #1 requirement would be to NOT even look at longhair cats knowing I would not be happy - no matter how pretty or great of a personality.

Well I'm a boy but I believe on us boys, short hair is actually always better. Long hair doesn't USUALLY show a sign of dominance. An individual see most other guys with very long hair that doesn't look like these people can fight. For example there is a boy in my school along with very long blonde hair.

I would suggest the American shorthair, if you have other pets. They are known to be very friendly and come in so many colors it's crazy (:
