Did Jonas Gustavsson make the save of the decade?

Very similar to a save made by Drew MacIntyre last year in the AHL.

BQ- Why do so many Maple Leafs players seem to be decent before going to Toronto and then stink or stink in Toronto and go elsewhere and excel?

This dates back to forvever...Larry Murphy comes to mind. Beauchemin. Steen anyone? Toskala. How about JS Giguere?

Update:

John-Michael Liles might be another worth mentioning seeing as I just read he was recalled to the Leafs. From USA World Championship player and OLYMPIAN to Toronto....Marlies of the AHL

Update 2:

James- Fair enough, except for the fact that he was a great goalie prior to arriving in Toronto (considered to be anyway although unproven in the NHL) and what about the rest of the people on the list...How about Giguere? Can't say he is an average back-up on a good team...he is arguably a Hall of Fame goalie.

The names go on and on....for goalies alone....Raycroft anyone? The next greatest thing to out of the NHL. Not a good sign for Bernier. His career is over lol I kid but historically speaking...

Gustavsson is a career .901 goalie (and was sub-900 last year for DET). That's what he is. And that's what he'll be.

Liles (his move to the AHL was for cap reasons after Clarkson completely boned the Leafs with that 10-game suspension for leaving the bench during the preseason) should have been bought out over the summer (he was a decent depth defenceman until he was given a contract extention right after he was concussed, which was stupid beyond worse- since his concussion he hasn't been the same) and they should have kept Grabovski who is doing great in WSH now that he's not playing with facepunchers for linemates (of all the beyond-dumb stuff that Nonis/Carlyle has done, this might well top the list). The other Leafs fans I know said you buy out Liles and keep Grabovski, let Bozak walk (unless he signs under $3mm- he would be a good third line centre), and do not sign Clarkson and his career best 49 points. Hey...look what happened (to be fair losing Bolland for the season further boned things up the middle).

Gustavsson is still a garbage fire. Toskala is a backup in Finland. Komisarek is a healthy scratch. Luke Schenn is a 5th/6th defenceman in PHL (he's when not being healthy scratched. Kaberle went from depth defenceman to Boston to bouncing around. Jason Blake bottomed out. The package that came for Phaneuf hasn't exactly lit it up (while Phaneuf is playing the toughest minutes of any defenceman in the league- period) in CGY.

Ben Scrivens (I wouldn't have made the trade with LAK- keep Scrivens as the backup under Reimer and keep Frattin (cheap serviceable bottom-six forward with speed) AND the $500K in cap space they gave away) is doing great @ LAK but Matt Frattin...not so much (Bernier has, to this point, been pretty good in the main but he's not used to seeing 50 shots a game).

Beauchemin netted Gardiner and Lupul- a forward averaging just under .9 PPG and a top-four defenceman in Gardiner who drives possession (the Leafs shot attempts with Gardiner on the ice were 20-17 for against SJS and a tire fire otherwise). I can live with that.

Ok before you start sucking Gustavsson **** let me remind you of a few things

    1. He has alot of skill but he is woefully inconsistent in net, he can play well for stretches but then he shits the bed just as bad and goes into a funk.

    2. Detroit has a lot better cohesive team defensive system in front of him then he had in Toronto, the Leafs love to hang the goalies out to dry and he was exposed here badly. He's an average backup goalie playing on a solid team so yes his numbers are going to be better then they were with Toronto, doesn't mean he's a good goalie though.

Great save but then in Toronto gratification must be instantaneous or it isn't worth it. Prior to 2008 of course.

BA- Probably could say the same thing about Phlyer goalies couldn't we. But then Toronto never fired a coach because he had cancer. As for JM Liles it was a matter of convenience. Other defencemen would be lost if they were waived to the minors. Rielly couldn't be sent to the Marlies. Speaking of Marlies your buddy seems to be fitting in well there. Too bad he doesn't know who you are.

That was one impressive save, but can't call it the save of the decade. The decade is still young.

Larry Murphy wasn't bad in Toronto, but he was misused, and the team and the fans expected him to be something that he wasn't. Twice during the 90s, Scotty Bowman acquired him, and twice it paid off.

Yeah, I saw it and it was fantastic. I would agree with you, yes it is the save of the decade thus far. Still a long ways to go though!
