Hives in 13 month old?

My daughter broke out in hives yesterday morning and had them all day I didn't even know they were hives so I took her to the doctor and he said to give her Zyrtec at bedtime for a week and if she is still having them he will do a blood test to find the cause. But she isn't having hives anymore since her first dose if Zyrtec last night. My question is, is the Zyrtec keeping the hives from appearing and they might come back after I stop giving it to her? I am wondering because it seemed as if our dog was the cause. Every time she messed with him the hives would spread all over her stomach and sides

Update:

Thanks @ common sense ! That is exactly the information I was looking for. But when you say "if she is in contact with what she is allergic to again, then she will get the symptoms again" do you mean even while she is taking Zyrtec? Because she has still been around our dog and no hives since she has been taking Zyrtec... Or they will come back when she is no longer taking it and is around our dog?

She is having an allergic reaction as the Zyretc worked to relieved her symptoms, it did not cure her. If she is in contact with what she was allergic to again, then she will get the symptoms again.

It sounds like she is allergic to the dog or perhaps any shampoo or flea powder/spray used on the dog. That is something you are going to have to research as your daughter cannot take medication daily as that is not good for her health, on a long term basis.

EDIT: Yes, the child will be protected from symptoms as long as she is on the medication. But, once off the meds, she will get symptoms again.

It can be an allergic reation, hence the zyrtec. My son breaks out in them when he has an infection. They always came before any symptoms when he had an ear infection
