What part of Denver should I vacation?

My boyfriend and I would like to vacation in Denver this June, but we don't know much about the city. We are looking to stay for about five days. He likes to do big city stuff and I like outdoorsy things to do. We'd like to have a place that's pretty much in between.

I work at a hotel in Houston, Texas and a lot of people come here thinking it would be a good vacation spot, but this side of Houston is industrial work and they have to drive at least 20 minutes to get any where or do anything worth their trip. I'm also used to Houston being a large city so everything is far apart anyway.

I am searching online, but I'm hoping to get a more personal perspective and advice.

Any travel tips would be appreciated. We don't travel often. Also any tips/trivia on the history, laws, and/or people of Denver, Colorado would be appreciated.

Thanks everybody!

You should stay in Downtown Denver and plan to take day trips up to the mountains. There isn’t really any in between. You can shoot straight to the mountains quickly via 70 or 6. The night life in Denver is pretty healthy. Everything you need is downtown and walkable. But be sure to bring a car. Boulder is about 30 mins from downtown, 15-20 to Golden, 1 hour to Summit county, 30 mins to Idaho Springs, 1 hour to Colorado Springs.

Five days would keep you really busy. if you fly in, just rent a car to get around. You are right, most places are spread out enough that you would spend a lot of time on the bus. You can usually park close enough to downtown to walk to everything there. Staying on the edge of the city is the cheapest and best way. Driving into the city at non rush hour times is best too. Other posters have suggested some great places, six flags, the zoo, the botanical gardens are great, but you shouldn't miss Rocky Mountain National park or Pikes peak while you are there. If you have never been to the rockies, it will leave an impression that you won't forget.

Denver has Six Flags Elitch Gardens, the Denver Zoo, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Botanical Gardens, and 16th St Mall.

If he's into outdoorsy stuff though, I suggest you vacation in Boulder or Colorado Springs... closer to the mountains with all the nice outdoorsy stuff.
