Is it more important to take a job at less pay or to keep on unemployment?

I lost my job last August and have been drawing unemployment benefits over the past several months. The benefits only pay 2/3 of what I had made on the job. Of course part of receiving the benefits is having to look for work and reply on the weekly claim line.

One of the jobs that i had applied for called me for a phone interview. It seemed like they wanted me for hire but I will not know for sure until tomorrow.

The thing is this job pays way below what I am getting on unemployment.

Would it be better to take a job that pays way way below what my benefits are just for the sake of having employment or to just stay on unemployment and hope something else better happens.

You should try talking to someone at your local unemployment office about your obligations. Depending on the numbers, you might be considered underemployed and still qualify for partial UI benefits. Or you could be tossed off UI for turning down a job offer (make sure they hear your side of the story first) and trust me, the company is very likely to report that. Or you could learn that the job you applied for would be considered inappropriate due to extremely low pay. Only your unemployment representative can tell you for sure.

On of the new requirements for employment is being employed already, so consider your options carefully and be ready with your answer in case this company offers you the job.

I would not guarantee unemployment. The government is not headed in good direction and I don't think you're taking much control of your life by leaving it to the government. Millions of American suffered from the government shut down and the future is no exception. I agree with MDavis. See what your options are. I was unemployed for a while and was desperate to find work. I didn’t think things could get much worse for me but late last year I stumbled across an employment agency that helped me and gave me options. I was able to get work a few months at a time and they kept calling me back for other part time jobs and contract work. They gave me options instead of just putting me on salary because I was going to be making less than what I was used to earning before I got laid off back in 2011.

Might be helpful. Let me know if you find anything. Good luck!

You would quit that low paying job anyway. Ask anyone that has taken a job that pays nothing.
