What exactly is a 'click'?

In some movies I hear people saying, 'It's ten clicks away'.

What exactly is a click? I presume it's a unit of measurement.

Thanks.

Update:

Great! Thanks to you both for that quick illumination.

A cricket is the sound made by a child's clicker consisting of a bent piece of metal that when pressed goes click and as you release it clack, so you get click clack, that is a "click". Now totally dependant on other sound it depends how far you can hear it, however at night in the quiet you would possibly hear it about 100 meters away. So effectively 10 clicks is about 1 Km

The sound can often be simulated by screwing a Coke can up and pressing the deformed metal.

Oh for info, these gadgets were given out to US troops at the Normandy invasion as the Nasties would not have a cricket nor know what it was. So the US para's could get in touch with each other after being parad in to a zone. Amongst others.

Do note the Normandy invasion was some 30 years before 'Nam
