Black screen on HP laptop?
Dropped it, but it kept working fine after that for several hours. When I got back on it the next day, I realized the screen wasn't working properly. The screen's lights are on, but it doesn't display anything other than blackness. I successfully switched to an external display (my tv) with an hdmi cable, but am unable to get the built in display to work. Some people recommended unplugging it, removing the battery, pressing down the power button for a minute and try to boot it. I have tried it several times but it hasn't worked. It;s an HP Pavilion entertainment PC, Intel Core 2 duo, running vista. Got it in 2009. Was working perfectly until now.

A connection may be loose, since it is broke anyway go to iFixIt and see if you can find your model and what you need to do to dissemble and check connections. Don't take it anywhere for fixing as spending a lot of money to fix a 5 year old computer is like flushing it down the toilet.

It sounds like the light that backlights the laptop screen is knackered or burnt out (if it's been 4 years of hard use, it's more common a problem than you'd think). It's a mechanical problem, not software, but your local IT fix-it shop should be able to replace it :)
