Hi,

How do you calculate the force in foot pounds or Nm required to evacuate a 200mm x 50mm cylinder to a vacuum of 2.5 psi or 5" hg?

Talk about mixing concepts and units.

The only way force would apply would be if the problem were stated as "A cylinder 50mm in diameter contains a piston with the end a certain distance from the closed end with air at atmospheric pressure. The piston is pulled out until the chamber is at 2.5 psi and is 200mm long - what is the force on the piston to hold this position?"

Evacuation would be work, not just force and involve distance.units.
