Distributor cap "O" ring replacement, Pontiac?
Ours son's 1984 Firebird, 6cyl car needs the "O" ring replaced under the distributor cap.
He brought it to a mechanic and he said that he couldn't do it because he needed a special tool. So the mechanic went and bought a tool and it wasn't the right one.
Some say that this is all nonsense and that you don't need a special tool to get to this.
Any suggestions?

No special tools needed, One bolt holds the distributer in, and if the mechanic knows what he is doing can do the job in about 20 to 30 minutes or less.
I'd find another mechanic.

I'm not sure what special tool they are talking about either. All I can think of is maybe a timing light? Or maybe the proper computer tools for an 84? The computers changed in 96 and in the 90's most of cars no longer had distributors so I could imagine that a lot of mechanics don't have the proper computer or even a timing light anymore.

Hard to find the "o" ring that seals the distributor cap to distributor by itself.Might be able to match it at a hardware store or some where that repairs appliances. The caps are usually held onto the distributor by two Phillips head twist screws.
If you referring to the "o" ring that seals the distributor to the engine, old gen GM's use a 1/2" bolt, there's a bent wrench made for that called a distributor wrench or can use a 1/4 ratchet set with a universal.
