I Am Looking For a Decent Target Rifle For Distances Up To 500 Meters.?

At present, I have my Rem 597 HB gathering dust and since it has a Harris bipod / Varmint scope / spare mags, sling etc...and I have almost $500 less tax, into it, I am looking to trade it in on the Mossie Night Train with a 4-16 scope option as I already have a 6-24 model. The Mossie is an entry-level and comes complete...bipod scope etc for a few dollars more. ( plus I can keep my Harris and he'll put the plastic one on the 597) I will get it from my buddy, the Gun Store owner and 1000 yard target shooter. He uses the Browning / NightForce / handloaded 308's and can hit a 10" target....while I am not that ambitious. My range is 500 meters long and if I can routinely hit a chest sized target at that distance, I will be quite happy. ****here's a discussion "hunting" question: What is the longest shot you have successfully taken and what was the longest shot you ever witnessed ? For me, it was a moose at less than 200 yards. I had the rifle ( 308 Winchester / 4X Weaver scope ) zeroed @ 200 but the distance was less than that. I hit him almost where I aimed and by the time I reloaded and acquired him again, he was down on one knee. Surprised the hell outta me...him too, I guess. I find that most deer, moose, bear are shot at a at relatively close range...and since BC mentioned Goat hunting....that was the longest shot I ever witnessed. My Uncle....300 Weatherby...Leupold scope...and a goat, at almost SEVEN hundred yards. ( goats go places sheep fear to tread) . That was as close as we could get...after hiking straight up all morning and moving down the ridgeline. . He was across a saddle, so my uncle took the shot. There was a tremendous, echoing boom and that little patch of white...about 2 seconds later, fell over and tumbled downhill a couple dozen yards. By the time we hiked over there and got the goat back to camp, I knew that would be my last goat hunt....unless a helicopter was involved. This shot occurred over 40 years ago and is still the best "hunting" shot I ever saw. Have a great day, everyone.

Update:

EDIT...as I said in a later post, there are big differences between Canadian and American gun prices...due to our laws, the difference in the dollar, etc. The only anomaly is the Axis / Scope combo from Cabelas...almost the same price as here. ( about $350 ) EG:...the bottom level Rem 700 is about $800...then they go up...next, a scope at least 1/2 that much...with a $75 Harris Bipod..... plus 12% sales tax....and you get the idea. A base version of the Mossie, with scope and bipod, is $529...today...and I only have to buy ammo. I read the reviews and talked to owners...they have no real issues.

The longest "One Shot One Kill" on record using a 308 out of a Remington 700 is 1900 yard. USMC sniper, Vietnam. The scope was zeroed at 1000yds, the rest was guesswork by an experienced marksman with probable well over half a million rounds of practice. On another occasion in Vietnam a sniper with a Remington 700 and his spotter with a M14 all but destroyed a NVA company (@100 men) from 800-1000yds.

So... The distances you prefer are well within the effective range of either the Remington 700 or the M1A (civilian M14) both chambering 308.

You cannot make a bad decision choseing either rifle.

BTW... a 4 inch target at 200yds is elementary.

A Remington 40X would certainly be among the best. Short of that, an out of the box Remington 700 Varmint rifle with very good glass not a bad target/hunting rifle choice. As you grow in ability many make a better stock, with pillar bedding better then the factory.

The difference is the 40X is set up finished ready to go as long as you own it without modifications needed.

I absolutely am a believer in once you have a good rifle as the basis, you MUST mount up top line glass. At this point it is a matter of " The better you can see, the better you can shoot. " Sorry SC one of me " me-isms.

Addition : here you go sir :

    http://remingtoncustom.com/40X.aspx

see also the Remington 40-XB Rangemaster link, on the right

Being in Canada I believe it meets you regulations there.

1 More thought : you mention the .300 Weatherby, well don't know how tough you are, but, I would certainly consider the .300 Winchester Magnum chambering. Whoooo hooo, why stop at just 500 yards ? Y'all lay in some shots from prone with a proper shooting strap. I believe you would find that LOADS OF FUN.

NOW who could argue the 40X is not the right rifle for Space Cowboy. I just love buying one and done for the rest of my life.

Edit 2: Space Cowboy, I do not know your expectations beyond what you describe, a " Decent Target Rifle For Distances Up To 500 meters ". The 40X is a target rifle, and is capable of 500 meter shots, no problem ( with correct cartridge choice ).There is nothing worse then buying what you hope to be the right rifle, only to find it whoafully incapable. Yes, sir, I did suggest one of the top of the line, best of the best. On the other hand I have a couple 40X rifles, you need nothing to add to the rifle. Yeah, it will hurt the pocket, but, long after that pain subsides, you will still be a real smiley guy, with a rifle that does just what you expected. Kinda like a smack upside, it only hurts a short time. That is the reason I threw out that option, knowing no one else would come up with a real deal rifle of the capability you describe, most guys do not even know of the 40X.

Source(s): please disregard the chambering ending at .308 comment prior, old information, as I am.

    hunting... don't do much hunting

target practice... the local outdoor range range goes to 600 yards with steel gong targets. so that's the farthest ive shot at a legit target.

wasr-10, norinco sks, mosin m44, mosin dragoon, savage 223, kel tec su16, and marlin 925 .22lr (not kidding) ok, doing it with the 22 was just wasting good ammo, but i wanted to see if it was possible. sonce i had figured out the hold over I got 4 of the next 10 rounds to hit the gong.

plinking... i once picked a 'rock' that I guessed was 700 meters away and shot at it until i hit it, changing elevation based on point of impact vs point of aim. it hit the 'rock' on the 1400 meter setting. my friend was spotting for me using binocs, you should have seen his face. he was like O.O holy shìt. It was done with a Mosin M91 with ussr lps surplus. we hiked to the top of some mountain and shot at another mountain, there's this huge rock and a tiny cave of some kind at the bottom, the target was the rock just above the cave.

alternatively I've done Norinco SKS, 700 meters, water jugs. we drove to place the targets. I put jugs all over a hill. I thought about clays instead since the're cheaper but hitting a 5" target without a scope at 200+ yards is sorta impossible. we sorta put them a bit farther than we planned. I wanted 100-500 meters, not 100-400, then 500-700. oh well, they all got shot, eventually.

Remington 700. It has the best smooth action and is around 500$. You might need to get a mew scope for it though. It's great accurate smooth action rifle

Source(s): My dad had one, i'm going to buy a new one soon

Is this a real question or are you just blowing off steam? Any of the air soft sniper rifles on this webpage should do nicely. All you need is a good hop-up kit and you're in business.

    Happy to be of service.

BTW, both of my teams lost last night.
