Why is Neon Genesis Evangelion so expensive?
The DVD collection was $80, so I've been hunting down the tapes online. I have everything but 8-12, and this is getting to me, even though it shouldn't. Why is the DVD set so expensive? I would expect a series as popular as it to be, I don't know, less expensive?

Because it went out of print over 2 years ago.
When it was in print, it could be easily gotten for $30-$40.
It is a bit odd for something so popular to go OOP, I suppose. Though it does happen a fair bit - just look at Sailor Moon.
But I think this was likely the result of ADV's old license on the show expiring.
Hopefully, someone will eventually license it again and release a new box set. But it might be a bit of a wait since the rights to Evangelion are bound to be expensive and there likely won't be a desperate demand for a reprint until it's been OOP for a while more.

The first one is worth it because I compared the one that I got to the other one that my friend had, which was the expansive one. It turns out that they're the same, containing the same thing. The box is just making it look super fancy.
