Is expired cans of beer still good if the cans are still closed?

I have a couple canned Bud Lights that has an expiration date of July of 2013..would they still be safe for consumption?

Don't believe most of the others, they clearly don't know much about beer.

Firstly, beer does NOT keep forever. In fact, after about six months the flavour starts to deteriorate, the beer starts to go flat, etc., and after about a year I wouldn't want to drink it any more. A can usually keeps the beer longer (than a bottle) as it doesn't let light through, but even a can can't keep it good for more than a year or two.

There may well be 'born on' dates on some beers, but this is mainly a marketing trick. Most beers do in fact have expiry dates (which could be either 'best before' or 'use by') as well.

That said, you can still drink beer past the expiry date, as in it's not going to give you food poisoning or anything, but don't be surprised if it doesn't taste all that great. I've drank canned beers up to 3 yrs after the expiry date, but it really was a borderline emergency situation (let's not go into details...) and it tasted metallic and was almost completely flat, so I certainly wouldn't want to do it again.

As already said, that is a "born on date" which is their way of telling you when it was brewed, so that you can know it is fresh. Yes, for the most part, you want your beer to be fresh. It does lose flavor, and eventually goes bad enough to become undrinkable. That's a general rule. Some beers, like IPA's with a higher hops content may last a long longer than typical beers and I've even heard talk of beers that "get better with age."

So, your bud light has a born on date of July 2013. They recommend it be consumed within 110 days (about 3.5 months) for the best taste. By those standards it is well past Budweiser's recs. But it should last a good while longer than that. At around 7 months, I'd say it may not taste its best, but it should still be OK to drink.

It was never any good to begin with, Brenda, but it's safe to consume. And it still won't have any of that icky beer taste you chicks hate.

Those are 'born-on' dates not expiration dates.

if they have been kept cold they are good almost forever.

The freshness dates on beer refer to room temperature storage
