How can I play all the Pokemon games?

So I have a few questions but basically let me explain the situation first. I stopped playing Pokemon after the original Gold and Silver, but with the whole Twitch Plays Pokemon thing I've recently gotten back into the games and I would like to play them all starting with Ruby/Saphire all the way up to the most recent one. However these games are all on different handhelds ranging from the Gameboy Advanced to various different versions of the DS. I don't want to emulate them since I do want to be able to trade pokemon between games all my games. So here are my questions

1. I know older DS models had GBA slots, so could I play all the GBA games on an older DS?

2. If yes to the previous question how would I go about trading pokemon between games? Would I have to buy a whole separate DS? Could you trade between a GBA and a DS?

3. I heard Nintendo is shutting down the WIFI on the DS in a few months, would this make trading Pokemon impossible? If so would I have to get all my Pokemon onto the most recent game to save them?

Nothing beats the physical handheld and cartridges; that's the one classic thing emulation just can't give.

    1) Of course, it's backwards compatible so it's entirely possible. Compatible models are limited to the original DS "phat" and DS Lite. Newer models don't feature the GBA slot (DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS)

    2) It's not possible to trade between GBA games through a DS system - few games were ever compatible with the wireless dongle provided with LG/FR and none are compatible with DS wireless communications. It's just not possible.

If you can get a link cable and two GBA consoles, you'd be able to trade with any GBA Pokémon title. If you buy two wireless dongles instead, be aware that you'd only be able to trade between LG/FR and Emerald; Ruby and Sapphire are incompatible with the wireless dongles so you'd need the physical link method.

    3) Only for online Wi-Fi (the Global Trade Station and such will be affected). Local wireless communications will not be affected so as long as you have another DS, DSi or 3DS console, you'll still be able to trade locally from DS Pokémon games.

As for bringing Pokémon to the next generation, that's completely possible as of the 4th generation. To bring Pokémon from the 3rd generation (R/S/E) to the 4th generation (D/P/Plt & HG/SS), you must first complete the game before you can visit Pal Park (D/P/Plt: Route 221 - HG/SS: Fuchsia City) and use the services provided there. With a GBA Game Pak inserted, boot up the DS game and choose the Migrate From LeafGreen/FireRed/Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald option on the main menu. This will allow you to choose six Pokémon who will appear in the park for you to recapture. There is no limit on which Pokémon can be imported.

In generation 5 (Black/2 and White/2), a Transfer Lab was introduced. After obtaining the National Pokédex, you'll be able to use the Transfer Lab on Route 15 near White Forest/Black City. Similar to Pal Park, you'd choose six Pokémon to import then play a minigame to recapture them. After capturing all your Pokémon, you're given the option to confirm the import. Repeat as many times as needed to import all the desired Pokémon.

In generation 6 (X and Y), Pokémon Bank and Pokémon Transporter allow you to import Pokémon from 5th generation games. It's important to know that you can only transfer Pokémon via Black/2 and White/2, so you'll have to import older Pokémon to these games first before you can bring them to the 6th generation.

Insert the fifth generation game into your 3DS then launch PokéTransporter. Make sure you have all desired Pokémon to be transferred in Box 1 (this is the default which cannot be changed). Once confirmed, your box will be sent to Bank's server. Load up Bank, go to your Transfer box and move all those Pokémon to another Box - you can't transfer again until the transfer box is clear. Repeat as necessary.

Sorry for the essay; I'm a sucker for being attentive to detail. I hope it helps! (and makes sense xD)

He EC. I love watching the Twitch Plays Pokemon videos too... And it actually got my right back in to pokemon as well, as I stopped playing them back when I finished the last one on the GBA. I've been getting back in to them as well, and I have just my Nintendo 3DS XL. I sitll have my pokemon cartridges, but my GBA has died unfortunately :-(

I regret selling my DS lite to be honest, because of the GBA cartridge slot... but, I have been able to play the games using emulators on my 3DS thankfully.

I use my R4 3DS Flashcard and use it to load games via emulators. There's an emulator for the Gameboy, Gameboy color, and the Gameboy Advance as well. It basically lets my 3DS XL play a bunch of classic games and classic systems. It even has emulators for Neo Geo and TG16 systems too. But you can't load and play them without the flash card. The one I use is the Dual Core one: http://www.r43ds.org/products/R4-3DS-Dual-Core.htm... and it runs them all beautifully!

    To answer your questions:

    1. Yes. If you have a DS or DS Lite, you can just use the GBA cartridges in them and actually play the GBA games on your DS or DS Lite.

    2. I know with my emulators, it essentially turns my 3DS in to a Gameboy Advance or Gameboy Color, and I can trade pokemon between games, with friends who play it on the GBA even. But both games have to be games on the same platform. By this I mean I can't trade pokemon that I have on my GBA pokemon game, with any pokemon game on the DS version of the game at all. But this only works on games that work with the GBA link or wifi link, and not all of them support it.

    3. No, only the online wifi will be shut down, not the ability of your DS to connect via wifi or to connect with other DS gamers if you are all playing together. But you are right that the online portion of it will not be available using the nintendo servers.
