Need Help deciding what to study?

Hi.

I am 17 years old and in a little more than 1year, I will go to a university. But I do not yet know what I should study. I am deciding between Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering. Physics is currently my favorite subject in school, and I am very good at it. I would like to study Applied Physics because I love Physics and I would love to develop new technology. Correct me if Im wrong...but Im under the assumption that Applied Physics is all about developing new technology while Mech Eng. is about understanding current technology and machines. I am hesitant to study Applied Ph. Because I live in a 3rd world country and my father has warned me that I wont find work with that Diploma. I am planning on studying at TU Delft So that is why he and lots of people suggest mech eng. What do you think...what should I do. Note that I like them both. I think i like Applied Ph. A little better but Im afraid to study that.

Thank you

Your father is right, especially about employment with a bachelor's degree. A bachelor degree in any engineering is sufficient, but in physics, you mostly need a PhD to get job security and people looking for you.

That said, if you would get a doctorate in physics, there is not a lot of graduates so the competition isn't high. Plus even getting your doctorate, a lot of universities will give you free school and a teaching stipend, so you can make some money while getting your education.

You have to go into where your heart is. Tell your dad thank god you aren't interested in dance or social work. Scientists are still in short supply ...at the graduate level... so if you decide on physics just assume you have to go all the way.

You will be surprised at how many universities around the world will want you if you do real well at getting your bachelor's in physics. If you get a PhD you won't have to worry about employment. You might have to relocate to wherever the research facility is, but I don't think there are too many unemployed doctorate physicists

If your country cannot support Applied Physics research, but does support mechanical engineers, and if you wish to go home to your country after studying, then your father and "lots of people" are probably right to urge you away from Applied Physics. If you planned to spend the rest of your life in Europe or some other part of the industrially developed world, then Applied Physics might be a fine choice.

Go for Applied Physics. Physics is your favorite subject, right? Then go for it. You can find a job in same field.

I am currently a College student. Tell you the truth, I started College without choosing a major until I took few Sociology classes and decided to major in Sociology.

I actually like studying sociology, it's fun and interesting to learn. You could become a social service worker. I am not sure if you are familiar with DYFYS, they usually work with people that are in risk of danger. Removing kids from their house only if they are livivng in a dangerous situation.

As a freshman you need to start taking elective classes while you do so,speak with your advisor and ask him or her to help you finding a major you want to study.

Always speak with your current high school advisor, they would be able to guide you as well.

Try to major at something, and minor at something else. It would benefit you in the near future.

For example. I am currently majoring into Sociology and declare to do my minor in criminal justice field.

Stay in touch with your advisor. They could help you.

I wish you the best now, and near future.

Go to the library and take a vocational aptitude test to find your field. There are places to take it for a fee but the library is free.
