Apostle Peter told Jesus he would follow Jesus to the end. The following morning before dawn he denied Christ?

Apostle Peter told Jesus he would follow Jesus to the end. The following morning before dawn he denied Christ three times. Why do people make promises they can't keep. Is it a fun game or something?

Just mirrors, Human Frailty. Ever heard of the saying in Matthew 26:40ff:"And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto (the very Peter you use in your example) Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

V41:"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

This reflects that these disciples were not yet filled with the Holy Spirit, and the turn of events, up till Jesus resurrected from the dead, and was seen by the disciples, their little faith was apparent, though in the end, they blossomed. The human flesh can never please God. Only through the power of the Holy Spirit, is this possible. Much less for Unsaved People.

Because at the time people make these promises, they truly believe they will keep them. I'm sure you've done the same thing. What's really great is that Jesus gives us the opportunity to fix our broken promises with Reconciliation just as he gave Peter the opportunity to fix his broken promises when he asked Peter three times "Do you love me?"

Maybe in the middle of the night Peter came to his senses and changed his mind. Changing one's mind about something is not quite the same as not keeping a promise. No one should keep a promise if the circumstances change just because of a promise. Besides, most of the time people promise things just to shut another person up.

:"Alright, alright, I promise I'll take you to the Creation Museum." Now, to find a way to weasel my way out of that one.....

And did you notice that Jesus predicted it would happen? Study of the sovereignty of God is very fascinating. Arthur Pink writes one called The Sovereignty of God.
