What's wrong with the Ewoks?

I grew up watching the original Star Wars trilogy and loved it. However, recently I read that when ROTJ was released, the presence of the Ewoks was controversial, kind of like Jar Jar in Ep. 1, but there was no explanation as to why. I can't see the problem. Although ROTJ is not as exciting as the previous two, I found it an excellent conclusion to the trilogy.

Does anybody know why these characters were controversial back then?

IIRC, people felt that the Ewoks were cute and cuddly and blatantly designed appeal to kids. Ewoks were a marketing ploy that was destined to sell toys, or at least the logic goes.

Lucas argued that he wanted to have the final battle be a triumph of low tech over high tech, but he could've done that with the original idea aka have the battle take place on Kashyyyk, Chewbacca's home planet and have it later discovered that Chewie was in the line of succession to be chief of all chiefs.

Chewie's backstory was recycled and used later on in Revenge of the Sith.

Before I say anything I'm giving a disclaimer, so no hate mail or cries of protest, please: the information I am about to relay was read a long, long time ago in a library far, far, away...but seriously, I read this in an interview decades ago, and for all I know, none of it is real and/or accurate.

The original script for RoTJ called for the forest moon of Endor to be inhabited by wookies. According to this interview, there were problems with the actors who were to don furry costumes and run around a forest moon. I don't know why. Pride? Lack of creative input? Maybe it was just hot. But for some reason I do not recall (and perhaps never knew in the first place) the idea of wookies had to be scrapped. So they went the opposite direction, quite literally. Instead of going tall, they went small. And if you don't believe that, just think about the two names: Wookie and Ewok. Wook-ie. E-wok.

If this story is real and not fiction, perhaps the controversy had something to do with actors being snubbed, or little people being exploited. I, for one, despise Jar Jar. But the Ewoks rocked it.

People complained that ewoks were placed in the film for children, and also would help them sell toys. Of course the complaints were denied by George Lucas. I personally thought they were so stupid and cheesy that it almost ruined the film. I liked ROTJ, but compared to the other two it's not even close.

I get frustrated just thinking about the ewok. It seems like something off of a barney episode.
