Should I date an ex-con?
Our first date was lovely. He seemed so sweet, attentive and considerate. He is poor but in school to finish his degree at 36. Rides a bike. Says he doesn't need a car. Then I went home, did my research and discovered he served four months in jail on felony assault for a fist fight with other guys. This was 4 years ago. Previously he got busted for burglary (stunt riding his bike on a building), trespass and a DUI. I asked him about the felony and he told me about everything else. He was worried I would dump him because other people will not give him a chance. To complicate things we are different races, and my family does not like his race of people. I lied and told them he is black. If I keep dating him and they find out his race as well as his criminal history I am afraid it will create a wedge between me and my family. Should I just walk away? I do not know what to do.
@John, he is not white, but he is not black either. And he is currently in school studying for a job where his record would not matter.

These posters are the most unlovely group I have ever seen.
You have to ask which is more important, a serious relationship or your family. This question is independent of the fact that he has a record because it could be any white guy.
Next, a fight from years ago doesn't mean he is a dangerous person as the other poster said. A lot of people discriminate against people with records and stereotype them.
The only concern is that he might have trouble finding work with a record. If you are from money and you need your partner to be wealthy then that could be a concern although sometimes they are able to find good work.
Don't judge a person based on their record. What they are like now matters. Does he still engage in criminal activity??

First off why would he tell you this on a first date? You never gave him time or a chance to explain things his way, and some people have a hard past and it sounds like he is getting himself on track. I definitely understand being concerned about it and watch out for warning signs or consider someone else but he at least deserves a chance I think. As for family that can cause so many issues, however you have plenty of time to worry more about that in the future. if you continue dating and things get more serious, I'm sure they'll love you no matter what and get over it eventually.

Lots of people have a bad past or have done bad things. i believe people can change if they want to change and be better. they have to want to and they have to do it. as far as the race thing i disagree with not liking someone strictly because of color. My family is the same way yet they know my opinion about it and how i feel. If they love and care about you they will be happy that you are happy no matter what the race.

He is obviously not honest to you. He tried to cover his dark past and the criminal records shows that he is aggressive. What's more , you and him have a family problem so , leaving is highly recommended. At last for a few days to calm down and see if you really love him.

Do u love him? Is the question. Fist fight? All the boys have been there. It's not like he killed or robbed someone. U dont hve to tell ur family about who is and wat he does. It's not like ure about to marry. Relax girll
