75 yard shots ? Texas ? Well, sir seems to me a lever gun is called for. Classic. Why ? You DO wear a cowboy hat don't cha ? A Winchester Lever gun just seems the one to be most useful, and would fit in well with the environment. I suggest buying one of the older ones that have a much better action then this new junk. New Winchester 94s are pitiful compared to the old ones. ( unless you want to put, $300.00 of gunsmithing work into a $300.00 rifle. Yes, the Marlin 336 is a nicer working gun if new is the choice, I just can not imagine a Marlin and cowboys. NOPE a Winchester, with out a doubt.
Now the lever gun with open sights, no scope, is a slim fast handling rifle. A real pleasure to shoot in the conditions you speak of. And of course Winchester Lever guns have been walking around those parts since they settled the west. Anything else and you might as well, carry an SKS commie rifle, and be prepared to be called names, and humbled by your buddies. Just sayin'
Be sure to get that Cowboy hat also. ( I always wanted a REAL Texas Cowboy hat )

I think I might get a Marlin 336 in .35 Reminton and put a peep sight on it.
I find the peep sight both faster and more accurate than conventional open sights and the 35 has much better knock down power than the 30/30.

Any lever action .30-30 is good. Just remember not to misuse the term "brush gun". Some have interpreted it as a gun that will shoot better through brush....not true. Some folks just don`t understand the briars and berry vines here in East Texas. It`s just a carbine length that lets one pick his way through brush without hanging up on one of those briar vines from hell. Open sights only is best.
My favorite for in the deep woods carry is my Puma in .454 Casull....more for defense from hogs than hunting.

First off, proper southern is "all y'all's favorite hunting rifle" ... just kidding.
Now to the question. Affordable is subjective. What's affordable to you might be extravagant to me or visa versa.
My favorite is a Tikka. It's very high quality for the price.
