How much to alter this dress?

I'm going to be a bridesmaid in my best friend's wedding. She is planning on having the wedding in the winter of this year or in the spring of next year. But, she's very indecisive and her fiancee is training to go into the Marine Corp, so who knows when the wedding will actually be?

I'm in the process of losing weight. At my smallest (134 lbs.), I was a junior's dress size 13. I've since gained a ton of weight (usually a women's dress size 18) and want to get as small as possible again. I love my friend, but my health and mental well-being are more important than a wedding; so I will not maintain this hideous weight of mine until December at the earliest.

I talked to the David's Bridal consultant at the dress fitting and she said I would be able to exchange the dress if I were to lose weight. However, if they don't have my new size at the time of the wedding and I have to get this altered, how much should I expect? I'm currently a 14 in this dress because it runs big (I'm usually an 18) and have 7 months at least to lose weight.

Update:

I asked the consultant what the absolute latest we could order the dress would be and she advised to just get it absolutely within 2 weeks because the dress takes 10 weeks just to come in and we don't want to have to worry about it. She didn't say how much it would be to take it in or hem it, though.

I think your consultant mis-spoke. I .used to work there, and there are no exchanges.

No one can tell you how much alterations are until she sees you in the dress. Do not ever order a dress that's too small. They can be taken in, they can't ever be let out. Almost never. Figure never.

Yes the alterations at DB are going to cost more than a little old lady who alters your dress on her dining room table. If David's Bridal make a mistake and it's ruined, they'll replace the dress. There are advantages to having work done by professionals.

Alterations at David's are expensive. To hem my wedding dress (two light layers of fabric) and shorten the halter was around $200. Talk to them there and put off ordering as late as you can.

Do you need to order the dress right now? Have you asked David's bridal what their alteration fess are?

It is going to depend on how much you need done to the dress. just getting it hemmed can run you $10-$25 depending on the fabric and layers

I think you shouldn't worry about it. You go ahead and do what is best for you. Lose the weight you want to lose, if that is the most important thing for you. It is only a dress, only a bit of cloth and thread which is a small thing to worry about.

Your friend isn't arranging her life around you, so why should you arrange your life around her? The people at David's Bridal are being paid big bucks to clothe wedding parties, so let them figure it out. I'm sure you're not the first bridesmaid to show up several sizes different than she was 7 months ago. If your friend is really a friend, she will be happy that you have succeeded in reaching your goal. If having all of her friends in perfectly-fitting dresses (that they'll only wear once) is her main goal, then rethink your friendship.
