Why do christians always try to explain using bible verses?

Why would you quoting things from your religious text convince anyone who doesn't believe what you do of anything? I'm confused about your logic. If someone is not of the same faith (if any), why would you assume quoting from your book would mean anything or ever change someone's views?

Update:

To the first six answers- thank you. Glad I'm not the only one with some sanity.

Update 2:

@ antonious thanks- it certainly is an addiction. Your explanation was a very good one- same explanation my mother gives me (and that is a HUGE complement). Thanks for answering.

Because 2 Timothy 3:16 and 2 Peter 1:20, 21 plainly tell us that it is not the words of men, but of the Holy Spirit. God is the Author of the Bible. Therefore the answers that men need are contained therein. For what they need is salvation. Nothing else will be of any use to them on judgment day.Why would I give you quotes from a mere human out of some other book or system of religion? That's just folly there.

I've often wondered this myself. I have to wonder also, if they even realize that quoting Bible verses does absolutely nothing at all to sway nonbelievers. Myself--I just skim over them if even that. To me, they are a non-answer. A sign that the person attempting to answer the question doesn't really have an answer and that they cannot think independently for themselves on this issue. For some of them, it may also be that this is how they are trained in the various classes they take. They are probably taught that the answer to everything is in the Bible, and are taught to respond that way, and how to make the vague verses stretch to fit just about any question.

Because this is the very way that we are told to answer people who challenge us. Our beliefs come from God's Word so it is via God's Word that we answer non-believers. If they choose to not believe us or the words of God that is a choice they have but they cannot, on Judgement Day, say "But no-one ever told me." They will be 'without excuse'.

Jesus' definition of a Christian - Luke 8:21 KJV And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

God's instructions to Christians - 2 Timothy 2:24 KJV And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

God's instructions for seeking what He said - 1 John 4:1 KJV Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. God's Word also warns that there are many false prophets.

A Christian serves God's Word when they answer questions about what God said. This information should be documented so people can check out for themselves whether that IS what God's Word says or not. Each person is accountable to God for their own seeking. (Romans 14:12, 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV). Some people may be genuinely mistaken, some people may be right, and some people may be purposefully trying to mislead when answering questions about what God said. If the documentation and the tools to check that out are given, then the Christian's responsibility for God is done. We are required to answer questions about His Word. What a person does with that information is between them and God.

For most of them they were trained to believe whatever their parents and priest or preacher taught them, but their undeveloped little brains shut down because of lack of ability understand dogma. Later as adults when the religion subject comes up they can only go back to where their brains shut down. Also, what else do they have except for more books written by church organization that try to stop honest publications from being bought by believers.

We tend to quote what we think is the ultimate authority on the subject.

For some one who claims science is infallible- they quote science.

If some one thinks Confucius was the wisest person a quote from Confucius would be expected.

It is not a sign of ignorance, it just indicates that they believe the Bible is the most authoritative book in print.

They really truly believe that it is the word of their god, so it is automatically and obviously true to them. What they don't understand is that other religions claim the same thing. Their bible quotes won't work on a Muslim, and Quran quotes won't work on Christians. Bible quoting doesn't work at all.

I agree with you, it doesn't make since that christians think that quoting verses from the bible would change a non christian's views.

Because The Bible is the only Christians' "argument" to show to non believers or to Christians who are about to leave Christianity to bring them back "near to God".

For some peculiar reason they don't understand that atheists don't hold the ignorant men they quote as infallible.
