When has this occurred in history?

Please give a few examples from history where someone left something up to chance because they were so certain it would work out and failed. Or when somone made false assumptions or somone who's actions had unforeseen implications due to being too certain.

Anything would help. Thanks.

Germany putting the Schlieffen Plan into operation in WW1 - they assumed that Britain would not go to war when Germany invaded Belgium

Napoleon assumed that Russia would surrender and ask for peace terms when he entered Moscow in 1812.

Haig assumed his pre attack bombardment before the 1916 Somme Offensive would destroy the German trench lines, kill all the defenders, and enable the British army to open up a drive on Berlin that would win the war in 2 weeks.
