Melbourne or Sydney?

Hi,

So I'm moving to the Eastern States pretty soon and I have the option with what I'm doing to either move to Sydney or Melbourne. I have been to both and have experienced lots of aspects of both, but I don't really know what it's like to live in either. I think they actually both are quite different and have their plusses and minuses. But I'd like to hear from locals what is great about your given city.

When I say I'm moving to Sydney or Melbourne, I do mean I'd be moving basically to the city centre.

Please don't give me answers like "Sydney is great - move there" - I don't mean to sound rude, it's just that that won't help me at all. I am really just looking for detailed explanations for both. And don't bash either city please - I know they're both nice in their own way.

*Btw, Melbourne having colder weather does not phase me as I've lived in London and Utah for a number of years*

Thanks everyone! :)

My pick every time would definitely be Melbourne.

We may not have the surf beaches, but we have 60km of beautiful bayside beaches without the overcrowding, jellyfish, sharks and other dangers of typical oceans like Sydney has. And we also have a bridge and a beautiful reef system in the bay. And Melbourne isn't cold anyway, so you wouldn't have to worry about that.

But that's all beside the point. Since you'll be living in the city centre of either one of the cities, Melbourne would be better for you. The streets are in a grid system so it's very easy to navigate around and almost impossible to get yourself lost. Sydney's streets are all over the place and are a lot narrower. I got lost there all the time when I lived there. On top of that, Melbourne is introducing FREE travel in the city centre as of next year, so you could be living in the city and never having to pay for public transport. That's a total win!

well yes sydney is great and you should move there...!!!

so great bits are the harbour my favourite method of travel communiting is the ferry any ferry just being on the harbour and at the end of the day going home with the lights of the city and the fresh air is what sydney is all about oh and always sit on the outside of the ferry very envigorating

the beaches there are some of the best in the world particularly the ones on the north side from manly up to palm beach... in fact I would highly recommend you consider moving to manly beach you would never want to live anywhere else once you have experienced life there... as for the city centre well the only places to live there are high rises around the edge of the cbd which does have its advantages but long way to go for an early morning dip in the ocean

Sydney has the harbour, the bridge and fifty kilometres of surf beaches. Melbourne doesn't. Apart from that there is not much between them. If you have been to both you know the pros and cons as much as anyone. If we advise you one way and it doesn't work out it gives you a chance to blame your wrong decision on others rather than yourself. The decision is yours and yours alone. My preference would be Sydney and the four million + people who live there would probably agree but the four million who live in Melbourne would disagree.
