Cold War tank question?

Why do does the American M60 have similar weight (around 50 tons) compared to the Russian T10 heavy tank?

I know Russian tanks were lighter than American tanks in general but the T10 has heavier armour than the M60, where does all the M60s weight come from? Its fire control systems?

The same thing applies to the British Cheiftain which is heavier than both aforementioned tanks.

Weight is not the issue. Mobility is. In WWII the M19 was created as a heavy tank, but the rapidly changing battlefield meant that they were either dragging in the rear or slowing the movement.

The T10 was really the end of WWII heavy tank thinking.

The M60 and the T64 both are designed with increased mobility in mind and are viewed as Main Battle Tanks (MBT).

Who was the best? I think M60s were great tanks, but I am biased. Many of the specifications in the T64 were incorporated into the M1 (lower profile / smooth bore), so the T64 had some design superiorities over the M60.

I love to get into Armor discussions. Too many ex CHOPPER pilots post here. lol
