Why are some mediocre musicians arrogant?

I've just started singing lessons last September, and I've greatly improved. Still, I know I'm not THE BEST and realized I have a long way to go. Yet, what I have noticed with many of my schoolmates who are musicians--usually the ones who haven't received formal training or if they have, don't take it very seriously-- is that they have an over-inflated ego, although their skills aren't so great. For instance, the kids in the chorus and band are mediocre; still, in spite of that, they seem to believe they're the greatest and feel as though they can tell others how to play their instrument. (This is the number one reason why I do NOT want to join the chorus.) Have you ever run across a mediocre but arrogant musician? What causes them to so cocky?

They have their head in the clouds, and are delusional and/or oblivious to their own mistakes.

They have a few good runs; meaning they do well at an audition or two, and come back feeling like the best musician in school - which is fine *to a point*. If they've proven they are the best time and time again, it doesn't bother me if they know it, provided the attention doesn't all go to their head. When it does, that's when they get cocky and annoying - blowing off practicing, mocking other musicians, rudely correcting even the slightest faults... As others have said, the musicians who know how far they need to go are the ones that persevere the longest and make it - whatever 'it' may be.

The arrogant ones will get reality checked soon enough. Join chorus anyways, but don't get mixed in with the drama. Watching the carnage from afar is much more fun than being a part of it. Good luck :)

It is just ignorance. plain and simple. That and most young person's need to feel superior and important.

I have run across MANY like that in my 45 yrs of music.

The best musicians are the ones who are good, but still think they need to know more.

The ones who think they are great will never be any good. Because they don't see a need to improve.

    YOU have the proper attitude.

it's because they are insecure and make up for it by believing they are great, even when it's not true. Or they just have no idea how bad they really are.

They could also be faking it til they make it. There are a ton of reasons why people act arrogant and they almost always stem from feeling like they aren't good enough somewhere in their life.
