Should Affirmative Action be applied to the NBA?

The NBA is over 70% black, 22% white, and 8% asian or other.

Sounds like discrimination don't it? Or are we talking merit here?

No. "Affirmative action," as opposed to being considered strictly on the basis of credentials or performance, should not apply to the NBA or anywhere else. Give people equal chances to compete for any sort of endeavor without arbitrary discrimination, and you will inevitably find divergent population mixtures in different professions. In my case, I work in a corporate department that is perhaps about 3/8 black. Yet I don't complain for a moment about the absence of proportional representation in that regard, because I regard a body count mentality as an obsessive fetish among all too many. (If proportional representation was truly applied across the board, the department I work in would have only about a third as many blacks as it does.)

We're talking merit here. If you can play, you get to be on the team no matter what color you are.

Affirmitive action shouldn't be applied to anything anymore. It is outdated and no longer neccessary. It never was constitutional anyway. It took away a person's right to their pursuit of happiness. It is ignorant to hire people who are less qualified for a job based on skin color.

Blacks are better at basketball most of the time, let them have it. And let the whites have back the things they are good at.

    Affirmative action has severly hirt

Source(s): Hurt the white man. It has kept his education slowand good jobs non-existant for the middle class. It seems like government offices are filled with African American workers woth a token white

The whole League should be disbanded. It's nothing but thugs and gang members

NBA stadiums should all be turned into Firearms range facilities

the asians would be at the free throw line most of the game - it would be rather boring.

Just think about it. If the NBA mandated affirmative action, then the league would lose money and old wealthy white guys like Sterling would not be making as much money as they do now. How many sell out games the NBA will have if most teams had majority of non blacks on their roster.

The sports industry is too competitive to enforce affirmative action.

absolutely not....the sports industry is actually damaging parts of the black community to a certain extent. So many in the black community believe that their way out of poverty or to a better life is through being a sports figure. This mentality must change. Neil De Grasse tyson made this point earlier in the year saying that black communities must aspire to also lean more towards being scientists, historians, english majors etc etc instead of focusing on one thing mostly.

Of course this isn't ALL but its a large part
