I think you left out a word, "he", before "really." If that is so, then it means he enjoyed telling you about himself, but he would rather talk about sports.

It means that he was happy to bring you up to date with details about his life, family, friends, interests and so on but, rather than do that at this precise time he would rather discuss issues about sport.
