I would suggest to do both. Layered and with fruit. If you use canned fruit, drain well and guess the liquid content of the remaining fruit and subtract that from the boiling water you add for the perfect mix. I have done jello with fruit cocktail, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, pineapple, kiwi, mangos, grapes, pears, peaches, cherries, nectarines, apricots, and marshmallows (not a fruit but so good).
Fresh is better but canned is okay.
For Fourth Of July make a layer of red jello, followed by a layer of marshmallow, followed by a layer of blue jello. Repeat layering until desired thickness achieved. Very patriotic red, white and blue.

blue jello is the best tasting one out of the three you have in my opinion, maderan oranges dont go good with jello, trust me. if you want to put fruit like strawberries and blue berries in your jello then i suggest going to a store near you, even some corner stores sell fruit canned and uncanned. hope i helped. happy mothers day!
