What type of TV should I get, 4k LED/ Plasma / regular 1080p Res LED?
Pretty stumped trying to get a TV for my media room. Price isn't a huge factor but I'm not looking to shell out an unreasonable amount either, possibly looking for something in the 1k-3.5k range, but I do value picture quality. I was pretty set on future proofing myself and getting a 4k display, but reviews say that the current content doesn't really take advantage of it so I was leaning towards Plasma. Do you think it's worth getting a plasma right now? Especially since manufactures are going away from plasmas, it might become an issue when it comes to warranty in the future. If not those two, do you think I should stick with a regular 1080p LED display? Any specific suggestions would be appreciated as well, thanks.
My media room has little to no glare, so that's not a factor.
I'm looking to get a 50"- 65".

Well, it would have helped had you specified a size that you are looking for. Your budget gives you a lot of choices at the 40-55 inch zone, less once you go about 60 inches.
LG, Samsung and Panasonic tend to have the best reviews as far as TVs go. Plasma screens work best in darker rooms, so it's not just the glare in the room, but the overall light environment.
Our two best TVs are both LGs, a 42 inch 120 HZ set, and a 55 inch 3D 480 HZ set. The bigger one is visibly the better one, but even the 42 incher looks really good.

At this time (Sept 2015) nobody is broadcasting 4k signals, so, a 4k TV is a waste of money. 4k probably won't be de rigeur until 2018 at the earliest.
Plasma is "out". LED is "in".
As for brand, the only one made in the USA (assuming that's where you are from and/or care about things like that), is VIZIO. It is also among the lowest price TVs without giving up any quality.
Here's something you may not have considered: Footprint.
I bought a Vizio 40" LED TV for my elderly aunt, without considering footprint.
The two, attachable (with a Phillips screwdriver), "legs",
went off the edge of her small TV stand,
which had held her 25" tube TV quite well.
She didn't want it mounted on the wall
(which would require her landlord's permission and extra cost),
so, a temporary "solution" was to place the VIZIO box on top of the table,
leaving the hard, styrene, blocks inside the box to keep it from collapsing
when the TV is placed on it, at least, until she finds a more suitable table.
My mother wants to replace her 32" tube TV with a 55" LED model,
but, she'll have the same issue!
So, if footprint is more important than other factors,
either get a professionally installed wall mount
(which may not be suitable or permitted or within your budget),
or look for a model with a single center "leg"
(and, of course, make sure that your existing table can handle the weight!).
