Are 3rd-party AC adapters for laptops trustworthy?
The AC adapter to my Asus laptop seems to have a short in it because I have to get it positioned just right for it to charge. I'm guessing this means it's only a matter of time before it bites the dust completely so I want to go ahead and get a new one. I've found a good deal on one on Amazon which has a few good reviews, but not enough for me to be quite comfortable with it just yet.

AC adapters are pretty simple peaces of tech. I use them with no problem and select them over OEM simply due to cost, which I assume you're looking for.

Generally 3rd party or 'replacement' parts are fine. Of course there are still differences in quality between certain replacement products, so in a sense you still get what you pay for. I would avoid any of the really cheap options. Also, regardless of the product quality, there will be a failure rate, so you want to purchase from reputable sellers who will honor a warranty.
