Meaning of 'I made believe" in the following text?
Later in the morning I made believe I woke up and came downstairs a little late.

It's hard to make believe you woke up since you have to be awake before you can make believe anything. Probably it's supposed to mean "I made believe I had just woke up" when I had actually been awake for a whiile.
