When do we use "was" and when "were"?

We say "if I WERE younger..." but we also say "I WAS younger then", when both are singular.

We also say "if he WERE younger..." and "he WAS younger".

As a kid, I'd say "if I WAS younger..." and "if he WAS younger..."

Was I (WERE I?) wrong then, or have the rules changed?

Was is singular: there was a cat

Were is plural: there were cats

But they are past tense :)

If I was younger is actually incorrect, my teacher taught us that.

Was is like a present or past thing : I forgot what it's called, but it's incorrect
